Born in the 1980s, want to get into cryptocurrency - have no idea where to begin

From basic google, coinbase seems to be the place to begin? Can wise miscers guide me.

Also there are different types, right? Etherium and bit coin etc? What does it mean and which is the “best”?

yes coinbase is a good exchange. kraken and gemini too. not much of a binance or bittrex fan any more. i'd use coinbase pro and a limit order to buy since the fees are cheaper than regular coinbase.

yes there are different "types", serving different purposes. bitcoin and eth are relatively safe choices.

best is a subjective term. if i were to buy anything right now it'd be ETH. you can kind of think of it as an improvement upon bitcoin that incorporates a turing complete programing language (solidity) to create "smart contracts" (laws written in computer code).
