Anyway if it were me I would just GPS spoof on apps first and see what sort of matches I can pull. If somehow Bumble / Tinder is a disaster that would personally discourage me from going even if there are good "hostel bar" places for smashing fellow female travelers.

I've been once, we built a church in a small village, converted some people, and provided medical care. It's crazy you posted this because I just started listening to a lot more bossa nova. One thing I remember is that we took a bus in Rio that would constantly drive without stopping, just in case there were hijackers. We saw a lot of favelas and stayed in a lot of small villages.

I think if you go as a tourist then you are probably fine in the tourist areas. It's safe inside the churches, but I figure you are not going just to see the churches. You should also get this soft drink called guarana and learn some Portuguese. It's really pretty by the coast, but like much of Latin America there is intense poverty. It does not even compare to a bad neighborhood in the first world.

I think the usual tourist thing is beach resorts and such in Rio which seems like it could be nice. Some things you could do are stay at a ranch, go to the old colonial towns like Salvador, or go see some natural sights through nature trails. If you are worried about criminals, just don't advertise your wealth, learn the basics of the language, show people respect, and give something if you see someone begging or asking for help.

Pre-Covid I travel the globe on business. There are handful of places I've visited and felt unsafe. Brazil is at the very top of the list.

Went to Rio de Janeiro a couple of times, including when they hosted the World Cup.

It was always a good time, and if you stay by the beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), life is good. Flamengo and Botafogo aren't bad either.

However, I spent one week in Lapa, and while it was super lively at night, it was also kinda sketch.

In comparison, I just spent 3 months in Mexico City, and of all the chit you hear about Mexico, I never once felt unsafe there. In Rio, you had to keep your wits about you.

Interesting - That was not my experience in Mexico City. We walked to dinner two blocks away and passed a tractor trailer. Two days later they found about 20 people with their heads cut off in that trailer (srs). That same night we went to eat at a restaurant that was in a very high end nice mall but it was absolutely deserted. At the end of the meal we asked why such a nice mall was deserted, the waitress told us that the cartel shot the place up one week prior and people wouldnt feel safe visiting for a few weeks. Needless to say we got the check and had cars pick us up for the return trip to the hotel.

...So yeah I've had some trips I felt safe in Mexico (Cancun) but I've also had some trips to Mexico that I've been constantly worried about my safety and have had armed escorts to and from work.

Mexico City, Cape Town SA, Cali/Columbia, Papua New Guinea (I was not there on business but pleasure) and surprisingly the outskirts of Costa Rica.....Brazil is at the top of the list (Sao Paulo in specific)


...but to be completely fair I've visited Detroit and you can take one wrong turn and be in just as bad of a spot as you can find in Cali.

Poverty drives violent crime and wherever it exists, violence exists.

To be honest, I kept like 98% of my time in CDMX around Chapultepec Park, so I was always in neighborhoods like Condesa, Roma, Polanco, all known for being as safe as can be. I never really ventured out too much further from that. I always felt at ease.

I can definitely say that my taxi from the airport to my studio was pretty seedy, however.

The company I work for uses low rent districts for their call centers to maintain profit margins...So when we visit an office its not usually in a tourist section. So in as much as Im in a dangerous place, Im in a dangerous section of a dangerous place...

..and thats what stood out about Brazil. Our office was in one of the nicest districts and It ALL felt dangerous. I made the mistake of taking out my cell phone and taking a picture of the building we were considering moving our office into. Within about 30 seconds the building security guards surrounded me and escorted me back inside because people simply seeing you with a laptop bag and a camera visible can cost you your life.

The only safe part of Brazil is the South Region. The rest of it is not safe.

I've only heard this from friends who've been there but apparently there are a handful of spots that are safe (stick to the beaches and tourist/resort areas I guess) but there are plenty of parts that are "aggressively" dangerous as it was explained to me.

For someone going there for the first time: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Foz do Iguacu. You can go to Manaus to go to the Amazon jungle.

Things are still pretty "bad" there but better lately. Things just re-opened in most cities last month after another lockdown.

Like in most cities, avoid dark alleys and such, you will be fine. Dont flash your expensive phone or be mindful when using it(most robberies are people riding motorcycles and will grab it from your hand).

Oh and go to Copacabana/Ipanema. Try acai- thank me later(or rep me).

Aggressively dangerous is the perfect description....They dont just rob you and then leave you alone, they rob you and kill you. They dont just want the money, they want the violence.

We had a co-worker that went out for a jog in the financial district of Sao Paulo. He thought robberies only happened to someone else after being warned not to go out and with perfectly good treadmills in the hotel. He was robbed and the entire hotel staff was dumfounded that they didnt murder him. It seems to be the miniscule exception of the rule to walk away from a robbery with your life.
