Benefits of Running

Misc

I am thinking about running in the mornings for about an hour.

I am too flabby in my mid 30's

Can anyone explain to me what the benefits of running are?

Is there anything I need to keep in mind as I run?

Breathing patterns?

Thank you boyos

very high impact though, so be prepared for injuries if you're fat

maybe start cycling first to get the weight down, then gravitate to running

Start by walking for an hour each day then slowly transition into jogging over time.

If you are mixing it with weight lifting I suggest running 30 to 45 minutes max.

I run a 7km around 45 mins 2-3 times a week. It really helps with the lifts for me.

Improved endurance and metabolism

Strengthening your core muscles and improving cardio is like pumping up your passive skills in an RPG. This stuff helps with just about everything including even your mental health. Plus there's benefit in improving running abilities if you're interested in jobs that require physical fitness tests.
Running is great, but swimming is the GOAT cardio activity of all times.
Don't get into breathing patterns. You natural breathing is best. If breathing is hard, you're pushing yourself too much. It's just training after all.

As others have said, don't go all in straight away, build it up or you'll injure yourself. Get good shoes, make sure your form is good and stays that way as best you can even when tired. Pick up cycling or swimming if you're carrying a bit of weight as it's less stressful on the joints etc. GL mayne

You're probably not going to be able to run for an hour, if shin splints doesn't catch up to you first, you probably don't have a built enough cardiovascular system to sustain it for that long unless maybe it was something you used to do and were serious about in the past.

- get good running shoes, i.e: get fitted at a running store (can make all the difference)
- maybe start off with intervals first (walk/run/jog)
- start off running as slow as possible, build up time then perhaps go for speed/distance

there are obvious benefits to running however if you are a heavier guy (over 200 lbs) it may not be worth the wear and tear, especially if you plan to do hour runs. overuse injuries to knees, shins, ankles are obviously a thing if you are serious about running (say 3-5 times a week, more than 20 miles a week). Also gotta keep maintenance on your hips/calves/shins/feet through stretching/strengthening as they can get pretty beat up.

IMO if your goal is to lose weight and improve conditioning, there are other ways to do it like the airbike, rowing, swimming, etc that doesn't put as much pressure on the joints and require as much maintenance. Maybe even try sprinting. But quite obviously running is the most basic of human activity and humans are built for endurance so there's the primal aspect of why you want to be decent at running.

I don't jog that much, just about 30 minutes a day, but what I do different is jog without shoes. When I jog with shoes my knees and legs ache. I never found a pair of shoes that caused different. Barefoot, and I don't have leg issues afterwards.

I honestly think running is one of the worst forms of cardio. I'd look into getting an elliptical or stationary bike if you want to do cardio for 1 hour/day

running = joint/knee pain. Ankle pain. Shin splints. I can only run for about 30 min at a time (due to pain) whereas with the elliptical i can do 1 hour no problem and you burn more calories.

I still run though, I just don't enjoy it

Unless you're a skinny person, my recommendation would be something like biking over running. Easier on the body.

There's a reason the only people you see running after the age of like 40 are super skinny people.

I used to run every morning when I was like 40 pounds overweight, and started getting knee pain and all kinds of weird feels. Switched to biking, and you still get the same endorphin high without any wear and tear on your body.

Running is beneficial for more than just cardiovascular health. You get all of the health benefits and some benefits that people who don't run can never know about unless they too run. Running through the pain and aches takes serious mental toughness but early on you're absolutely going to have to do it.

Some unusual things i noticed, longest run ever was 18 training for the Marine Corps Marathon

1. better posture, to keep and hold that form for minutes/hours at a time requires back to be upright and arms lose but close to the sides/
2. better digestion, no need to explain but you get it.
3. skin is less dry from all of the sweating and cell turnover
4. better oxygenation from swallowing so much air, better energy and breathing.
5. less hunger for hours after the run.

good luck op!

I think it messes you up in the long run(pun unintended). Something about not achieving your best performance later on because of a bad habit you're making. I'm also kinda into the breathing autism thing, but I've been shown a quote from a book arguing against it. It was either Jack Daniel's Running Formula or The Art of Sprinting by Warren. I haven't gotten to reading them yet, but they're very reputable books.

This. If you've never run before and you're overweight, you'll likely get hurt. Better off to start with long walks, then walk/jogs, then jogs, then full on runs. Get proper shoes, stretch a lot, and make sure you're hydrated. Running is good for losing weight and cardiovascular strength.

Try starting with HIIT. The running bursts release cortisol and brain derived neurotropic factor, which help improve brain health.
the stress induced by a single bout of HIIT induces a remarkable response of BDNF and CORT boosting working memory capacity in healthy young males.

serum BDNF and COR concentrations did not change during the warm-up period. ... Serum BDNF was increased at the point of exhaustion

It's good for your cardiovascular health, the heart is the most important muscle. Heart disease is the leading cause of death so doing regular cardio will extend your lifespan. It will also help you lose weight, clear your mind, and provide endorphins that feel good.

Definitely don't overexert yourself if you are just starting out. Test where your limits are, and you may get really sore legs at the start as well. It can take time to get used to it at first. Just remember to stretch and hydrate.
