Brahs who have worked as an expat, especially in South/East Asia

How did you find a job?

Is it difficult if you are NOT:

a) there with your remote job that pays enough for the standard so you just move there as a location to live in on a temp/tourist visa or whatever

b) English teacher / other teacher

talking about high-pay white-collar professional jobs - software dev, accounting, lawyer etc in countries like:

a) Singapore

b) Hong Kong

c) South Korea

etc.

Do you do the Linkedin + Indeed -> job title + country combo and hope for the best?

It actually appears to me that it is difficult to get these type of jewbz.

Why are you considering such a difficult route then? The remote work option sounds much more feasible.

Got a lot of coworkers who have worked all around the world and I’m pretty sure most of them started expat work by getting on board locally with a large multinational and then being asked if they want to go global

Yup exactly

That carrot was dangled in front of me just recently when giving notice and telling them I was going to a smaller company

Also applied for a few jobs through bayt.com years ago but didn’t seriously pursue it

I work remotely over the internet, have done this for a few years. Technically I can work from anywhere as long as I have an internet connection, but I prefer to stay in my birth country and have a stable house to live in.

I've worked for companies in Europe and such, and I've had co-workers from all over. Some countries are a lot cheaper to live in. English teachers don't make a ridiculous amount, and a lot of them don't even learn the language or leave the expat bubble. It's the easiest job to get if your only serious skill is speaking English, which is a skill that is in high demand all over the world.

You'll need to have a marketable skill and learn a new language if you want to work for a foreign corporation. If you work fully remote for any corporation in the world, then you can work from anywhere in the world that has internet. This may have something to do with recent travel restrictions.

There are also large multinationals that can transfer you to foreign offices.

So how does it work though since I have you here and you understand how I am trying to structure this as an autist.

You work for a large multinational and you are VP and then you can be offered an Associate Director in say another country? Because after all, it needs to be paired with advancement not just for the sake of living elsewhere.

How do you even get yourself involved in these opportunities?

Why don't they source a local for that in the destination country?

Does this only happen on a decent scale in certain industries?

It doesn't need to be paired with advancement, just being highly skilled and highly specialized will give you opportunities to really move around if you want to. Many other parts of the world don't have the same expertise available locally, and that can be a big driver of it

Step 1 is to have the skills that are in demand, Step 2 is to get on board with a multinational, Step 3 is to demonstrate your ability, and Step 4 is to cultivate the relationships with higher ups who influence these decisions.

It's only likely to happen with the higher-paying, highly specialized white collar jobs with a high barrier to entry. Physical labour etc can be sourced anywhere and is likely a lot cheaper in other parts of the world than it is in areas where you can develop the skills that allow you to work internationally.

Prolly knowing Cantonese and using the Cantonese internet. There are probably job sites in English for HK as well as it is a very Anglicized country. I'd get familiar with the companies in that country and look for openings. Language barriers are a real thing though, learning a new language allows you to cross the barrier.

If you are a young Asian American or a western born Asian guy, honestly it be better off for you in the long run to migrate to East Asia. If you have in demand skills like engineering, programming and tech related skills that be the way to go. If you are competent to learn their languages, you will have a huge advantage to assimilate. You might have a better quality of life than in Canada or America. But make sure you actually have skills that everyone globally in the world wants.

I have Filipino friend who seems to be doing well. He moved to Japan under the JET program but he has in demand skills like software engineering and can speak Japanese. So he was able to transition faster. He was also young like 21 when he went abroad. The cons is it might be harder for you to get women if you are only used to white women and they expect you to learn the language because you are Asian. English teachers get paid minimum wage or lower in a country like Japan and Korea. There is no point moving abroad if your socioeconomic status will become lower. It's not sustainable being an English teacher and they don't English in Korea. Koreans go to the Philippines to learn English, because it's cheaper and better quality.

But if you are a young educated Asian guy with in demand skills, this is something to think about if you are concerned about how the racial demographics in USA will lower standard of living. I say this because I think skilled Asian men in engineering and tech, the westerners don't deserve their skills because they keep creating a welfare society in the west that undermines smart Asian men to succeed.

Some english programs you can do well. I know many guys who made 50kUSD running a language school in Thailand etc. That's much better than being a 6 fig wgecel in Oklahoma and having to risk it all to date a single mom.

I work in project controls/management consulting in oil & gas (and now mining). Many of the people I mentioned ^^ who have worked internationally had moved around to execute projects across the globe. Middle East, Brazil, China, Japan, consulting all over Europe in a range of capacities, etc

Obviously for the plebs in America who don't understand to get these high paying roles you have to have good marketable skills and qualifications
