misc statisticians GTFIH (pls)

whats the deal with item response theory and Rasch scale?

I have a questionnaire in Likert scale, that will yield ordinal data. While looking at ways to convert it to interval or continuous data, came across ITR and rasch scale. makes no sense, what is it
