How much of your monthly paycheck should go to rent/mortgage?

I would imagine a decent amount of you guys are corporate and get paid biweekly/semi-annually, so essentially 2 paychecks a month. Should your rent or total mortgage be more than a paycheck? less than one? What's a good percentage?

Reps for good advice/answers.

If you aren't making 500k/yr and squatting in an abandoned soap factory then your finances are simply out of control.

One of my co-workers bought a shoe box house in Chicago, something like a 2,000 dollar a month mortgage for 30 years.

He's beyond miserable.

Up to 50% is more realistic these days towards the beginning with the rapid increase in housing prices vs incomes

The longer you wait while trying to be frugal and not overspend, the higher the prices of the housing will go relative to your income. Debt is your friend when you have a currency that is being pimped out like a cheap whore in an inflationary environment

Doesn't apply to miscers who are all Saudi princes and CEOs

No more than 1/3rd of gross income.

Anything more means you can't afford it.
