What Linux distro should I install only my new Linux box?

As part of a decent purchase I have a run of the mill laptop that I've decided to make into a Linux box.

I've recently started my master in information technology (no background in it or cs) and I've been learning a lot of interesting stuff.

I'm pretty curious to see how operating systems work more and also becoming more proficient with command line etc.

Previously I've had only one Linux experience which was a simple Fedora installation on a virtual machine. There's just do fuking many to choose from.

I'd prefer something that operates with a desktop environment like a computer should and less like a fuking tablet. Not sure yet what is do with it other than fuk around and browse the internet but still would like to get it started.

Run Ubuntu and KDE as your GUI.

Linux is really only useful for terminal though.

For desktop environment, you are going to want something other than Gnome since that is kinda like tablet style. KDE Plasma is really popular. Mate desktop is like old Gnome, more of a traditional desktop, and is pretty low on resource usage. Cinnamon is similar to that, also.

If you want something super easy to run that just works, Mint or any of the official Ubuntu versions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu Xubuntu, etc) will be most likely to give you less issues.

If you are a little familiar with the command line and don't mind frequent updates, you might want to try Manjaro or EndeavourOS. Endeavour is the best Arch based one IMO.

Fedora and many others make it a little harder to get proprietary codecs you might need.

X2 for Arch Linux - easy to go minimalist, just install what you need, optimized for more modern processors. If you want to go one step further, look into Gentoo - compile everything locally, including your own kernel.

Linuxjon is by far the best operating system. It allows the user to forget house cleaning, yardwork, etc but gives you a new appreciation for farm animals. It will also eliminate anything China because it doesnt exist and come preloaded with a flat earth screensaver. Soon you will appreciate not only the lack of bloatware on your OS but the lack of an ass on your ol lady. Be sure to add squalor.ie for your browser and make sure its updated to the 350 edition.

Ubuntu & KDE.

User friendly, especially for newer users, every error/issue you could come across is well documented. Then you can learn what apps you can/want to use in linux. Will be overall similar to windows in a desktop experience, just with less bloat and ease of upgrades etc.

Just install virtual box and play around with different distros to see which one you like. Arch Linux is more for the advanced, but is highly customizable and has the best Wiki available for learning. Ubuntu is good because it’s more user-friendly. Kali Linux is good if you’re into infosec.

I use Ubuntu MATE. It even runs some games.
I wish it had a thumbnail viewer for pictures though.

Probably Ubuntu as it has good documentation.

I'm currently running MX Linux and am happy with it. (Xfce is also better than KDE or Gnome.)
