How long did it take to double your money with index funds?

Say you invest 100k into your average index fund

How many years would it take to double that(given you didn’t add any fresh capital to the principle)?

I don’t own any index funds just blue chip dividend payers and it took about 7 years for me to double my principle with dividends reinvested on top of dividend hikes.

Wondering if I should have invested into indexes instead.....

The rule of 72

72/rate of return gives you a rough estimate for the doubling time in years.

Example:

10% return per year

72/10=7.2 years

Just need to predict your annual rate of return

Interdasting, hard to calculate exact YOY with constant dividend hikes and reinvestments

About 7 years

Key is to always be adding to it. Really anyone with a decentish job (60 - 80k salary) should be able to become a millionaire by their 40s this way

Once that happens you can expect to return $100,000 on average a year, just in investments. Not bad
