When I was little and didn't want to sleep...Or go to school...Or eat...My family would tell me that the Babau (basically Italian boogeyman) was going to come get me, it was fuarkin' terrifying at the time.
Would kick em in the nuts

Not often, but there were a few instances. One time it was in regards to spiders. My mom was freaked out that I was completely unafraid of spiders. We were at a dirty laundry mat at the time and while she was washing clothes I was over on the floor covered in spiders while playing with them.
She said some stuff to get me to stop playing with spiders. It was so effective that to this day its one of my biggest fears. I will take on a snake with less fear than taking on a spider (true story). I literally went from the kid picking up spiders and playing with them for fun to the grown man who's more afraid of them than anyone should be.
Thanks mom. You fukn ****.

Got told that if we girls were ever caught sleeping around, we'd be killed and buried in the backyard.
Not until I grew up did I find out the story was actually true. Had a distant female relative back home back in the day who ran off with some dude. Came back when he kicked her to curb and 7 months pregnant. Her dad and brothers killed her and buried her in the fields. Savage AF.
Glad my dad or brothers weren't crazy like that. The worst that would have happened to us would be that we'd be disowned. We never tested the theory anyhow.

Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

I’m half-Mexican, my Dad’s side of the family is Mexican, and my paternal grandmother was full blooded Mexican. She used a word I don’t know how to spell, the Cacuy. (Ca-koo-wee)
She used to tell us kids who didn’t go to sleep when they were supposed to would be kidnapped by the Cacuy and taken. Sometimes, when I turned the channel to a scary movie she would say it’s a Cacuy movie and that would scare me into turning the channel.
