thoughts on Jetta GLI??

looking into a 2019-2021

scared though for VW reliability

I'd rather be in a Toyota or Nissan than any of the new VWs tbh. The new Camry and Maxima are sick daily drivers

Highly considered it for my daily but settled on a ‘21 Forte GT. The Kia had better looks and interior but the engine and trans goes to GLI. It’s a good choice for a daily. Add a COBB accessport later and you have a fun little DD.

Both made in Mexico though.
We’re all gonna make it.

do VWs still rattle? I haven’t been a new one in any model but from what I remember the interior felt very plastic and rattled

Haven’t been in a newer one lately. Wish I test drove the GLI, the Kia 10-yr powertrain warranty is what got me.

they run low 13s with a tune, handle great and have nice interiors. they are a little smaller than accords and camrys but much more fun to drive. Probably the best overall car you could get for under $30k at the moment.

mk8 is going to all touch screen and touch capacitive buttons on the steering wheel. I would get mk 7.5 while you can.


Its all based on mk7 GTI which has been around since 2015 so many of the bugs or issues are worked out or well known. People have gone over 100k on their TSI gen 3 engines. People have also tuned or turbo swapped them so if you are stock then there is plenty of headroom for more pressure. Engine is fine besides some carbon build up that should be cleaned.

As a former gti(tuned) guy the cars are fun and great for a certain mileage, then things begin to happen.
Car and Driver ranks the Jetta #8 in their top 10 cars in that category list.
It depends how long you want to keep it.

camry good for reliability but not the same class in terms of handling. Someone wanting a fun car like a GLI prob wouldnt like the camry handling.

Mazda 3/6 is atleast a little bit fun in the corners compared to everything else in that econo sedan class.

Seems good to me. I like VW. I'm driving a poverty Spanish VW from 2008 and I like that it has a timing chain instead of a belt. It's reliable.

wut only 3 years old, you can put sound skin in the door panels to give them a heavier more luxury feel, like a heavy thud when you close the door as the luxory car doors are heavier with the oem sound deadening.


Anyways go test drive it. If you already have an SI you would prob be disappointed with the camry and maxima type cars people suggested and SI is the only Japanese designed car out there with handling at that level besides a miata.

The interior is more upscale but IDK if its worth trading a 3 year old car for. Would be interested what you think of the difference between them though after a test drive.

yea the trade in might not be worth especially how used car prices are now and overall the GLI is more expensive new as it is.

I might just wait and see how the 2022 sedan Si is.

I don’t know about the new Jetta’s but the wife bought a new sedan in 2017 and we kept it to let the kids drive. It was a great value at the time compared to Honda and Toyota. Fake leather seats are nice, peppy, sunroof, remote start, back up camera, led lights. Granted it only has about 14k miles on it but we’ve never had a problem. It doesn’t feel any cheaper than a civic.

test drove one earlier..I’m not sure I like this more than my Si.

the interior is def a step up but my Si. a bit more power but handling is basically neck and neck.
