Seasons 1-4 were GOAT show of all time.



Seasons 5-6 started to show some weakness as D&D got away from the source material and started making their own plot decisions and writing themselves into corners. Entire sand snake "plot line" was lolwut from the start. But we mostly excused the bad parts because Hardhome was incredible and Battle of the Bastards wasn't far behind








Season 7 was just a race to close up plot lines as quick as possible while sprinkling in lots of feminism and fan service (return of Gendry even though he had served his purpose to the plot, etc)




Season 8 was just the biggest steaming pile of dog chit that has ever aired. Even before it aired, the actors all knew it was going to be absolute trash.

Hardhome was season 5. Hold the Door is another one that was retroactively ruined by the way the show ended. It demonstrated that Bran could warg into the past and change things. The books have hinted at this from the very beginning--in the first book, Jon didn't find Ghost until he heard "the wind whisper through the trees" and turned back (basically the same as what the show portrayed with Ned hearing Bran at the Tower of Joy). But then after showing that Bran can not only warg into the past, but warg into people while he's there, HE NEVER USES THIS ABILITY.

It wasperfectlyset up, too. We see that Bran warging into past-Hodor caused him to repeat the phrase "hold the door/hodor" repeatedly. You remember who else was known for repeating a certain phrase? Mad king Aerys and "burn them all." Why not have the Army of the Dead make it all the way to Kings Landing for the final battle, and then show Bran warg into King Aerys to be the one who gave him the idea to stash Wildfire all over the city? That same wildfire can then be ignited to destroy the Army of the Dead. Bran's warging abilities would not only defeat the Army of the Dead, but they would also setthe entire storyin motion by causing Aerys to go mad, kicking off Robert's Rebellion. The city still burns, but it doesn't have to be a contrived reason like Danaerys going mad, and it means the Army of the Dead doesn't have to get stopped, like, immediately. They could have marched their way south through Westeros killing everyone and growing their army, making the situation seem completely hopeless before reaching Kings Landing for the final battle. The correct answer was RIGHT THERE in front of them, but D&D were too stupid to put the pieces together.

They did the SAME THING with Stannis' character. They could have achieved the same end result but in a way that made more sense:

So the writers spent a whole season setting up the fact that Stannis loved his daughter Shireen and protected her from everyone, including her own mother, Selyse.



Selyse was a zealot for the Lord of Light. If Shireen has to burn, it would make much more sense for it to be Selyse who does it. Here's what SHOULD have happened:

-Selyse, influenced by Melisandre, wants to sacrifice Shireen to the Lord of Light
-Stannis says fuk no
-Selyse goes behind his back, has Mel sacrifice Shireen before Stannis can stop them
-Stannis has Selyse arrested and hanged for murder, Mel flees
-The army is horrified. Even though Stannis didn't sacrifice his daughter, it leads them all to doubt this new religion and most of them desert.

This achieves the exact same plot points from the show: Shireen burning, Selyse hanging, and the army deserting. However, unlike D&D's writing it doesn't require Stannis and Selyse to both do a complete 180 on their character development.
