The only jobs not getting filled is food service. Apparently people don’t like getting paid $2/hr and not getting tipped.

Everybody is still collecting unemployment for a little while longer while working jobs on the side still and double dipping.

Likely what will happen is unemployment will end in another month and another wave of people will return to work, but many of these side gigs will become real businesses within another year or two.

The only jobs that need employees are manual labor type gigs. The rest will hopefully be pushed to adopt technology and eliminate unnecessary positions.

I suspect a lot of these jobs going are in the hospitality sector that offer rubbish pay and zero hour contracts.

Yes there may be jobs going but they are bloody dreadful ones and I can imagine people are waking up and realising they don’t want to work in these ****e conditions

Even other jobs like cashiers and bus drivers and chit. And whatever happened to teenagers looking for some spending money working part time jobs?

Speaking of food service, do you think this may spell the end of the tipping culture? Regular wages, no tips, and pricier food?

Honestly I don’t know. Even though I tip well I hate that I have to. I think tipping should be judged by good service. But so many people feel guilty not tipping. The new norm is to tip on carry out which is so ridiculous. I can’t ever see see increased wages in food service in the us.

Also a lot of the people who were working those low paying jobs just gravitated to gig jobs which if you grind you can make decent pay and more money than poverty jobs. Gig jobs also are not factored into unemployment rate.

I went into a Panera the other day and you are bombarded by this as soon as you walk in the door. Why work for $500/week when you can sit at home and collect free benefits for $700/week? This is Biden's America. And you know what happens when a company or a country gives away too much free money? They go bankrupt. Out of business.

Most people are willing to work, but have reasonable expectations that their work will pay off for them. That means having enough for housing and a vehicle and food and bills and insurance an retirement and a savings account, etc. When it doesnt work out that way, there is little incentive to work at all. Wage slavery just isn't good enough.

Then a young man will also want to be able to attract a fertile young female, but dont even get me started on how dysfunctional that is.

Democrats’ Stealth Plan to Enact Universal Basic Income
The Covid stimulus would give checks to parents, with no strings attached. UBI for everyone is next.

By Robert Doar and Matt Weidinger
March 2, 2021 6:25 pm ET
WSJ.com

Universal basic income is about to arrive in America. Congressional Democrats’ $1.9 trillion stimulus bill provides for no-strings attached checks, limited only to parents of children under 18. This UBI for parents is billed as pandemic relief, but its real purpose is to put a stake in the heart of work-based welfare reform.

Supporters blandly describe their plan as “Child Tax Credit improvements for 2021.” It would replace today’s annual child tax credit, which tops out at $2,000, with more-generous “child allowances,” payable monthly. Those allowances are federal payments of $3,600 (or $300 a month) for each child under 6 and $3,000 ($250 a month) for older children. The current credit increases with income from work; the new one would provide the same large payments to all.

Under the guise of pandemic relief, the federal government would give a nonworking single parent with two preschool-age children and one in grade school $850 a month. This would come on top of other government benefits, including $680 a month in food stamps, amounting to $18,360 in combined annual income. That’s the equivalent, without accounting for taxes, of working 28 hours a week at $12.50 an hour. On top of that, the family would receive health insurance from Medicaid, and it may also receive housing and child-care assistance. Government benefits to nonworking households that are this generous are bound to reduce employment.

The bill would provide the new benefit for only one year, but the Washington Post reports that “congressional Democrats and White House officials have said they would push for the policy to be made permanent later in the year.”

People are getting paid more on unemployment + stimuluses than they were at their crappy jobs. So they don't feel the need to work.

It's almost every sector, especially the lower skill level jobs.

Here is the thing these unemploycells don't understand. Right now, is an opportunity to level up because it's an workers market like it's a seller's market in the housing sector. Companies are hiring underqualified people and willing to train so it's a great time to get your foot in the door and break out of the crap you were in before. Things will go back to normal and you'll be kicking yourself for not taking advantage of this. Not only that but once you have been unemployed for an extended period of time, even your past experience will be considered irrelevant and in fact, most people who have been unemployed for over 6 months take a lot of adjusting. So things go back and there will be a rush of people trying to get a job and a lot of companies are learning to deal with smaller staff now. Don't sit out of opportunities and then gripe down the road about how the world passed you by.

It's always higher than reported since they use the numbers based on those filing for unemployment. Once it expires they're not counted.

Something like that.

For higher paying jobs IDK. For the kind of jobs that about half the people in the country are employed in? The job got crappier and for many people the pay also went down.

- required to wear a mask all day
- required to get vaccinated
- fewer staff/people who are working expected to work harder
- grumpier customers because of pandemic measures/not enough staff
- employers slow to increase wages vs. crazy inflation

So now your job sucks more, you have to work harder, and the benefit to you is also less than before because inflation is running hot.

It isn't great on employers either. Some employers can pay a higher wage and just deal with lower profits. But some employers are getting a double whammy of higher labor costs + higher material costs for a business that didn't have a fat margin to start with.

You'll never get someone to work if they can't afford basic things like housing and transportation from it.

I can’t speak on all states but I know in Texas that ended months ago. I know liberal states still have all the benefits but I was speaking specially on conservative states assuming they just followed texas’s lead

Basically this. It’s not a hard decision to make for most people with low income jobs. Also, why work when you get paid about the same to stay home?

That's not really true. Some people actually feel a need to provide for themselves and their family. Not enough of those types of people anymore and that is why everything sucks.

This is what I've noticed as well. I see a lot of "Now Hiring" signs around, but nearly every restaurant, fast food joint or bar has them up.

Just looked and $1240 a month is the least expensive 2 bedroom apartment in my zipcode.

Minimum wage here is $7.25 which give you a monthly gross pay of $1208. So two roommates working full time at minimum wage should gross $2417 X .33 [one third gross pay] = $797.50

Not gonna make it.

Prevailing wage is more like $10 to $12 an hour.
@ $10 an hour X 2 roommates:
Combined monthly gross income $3,333.33 X .33 = $1,100
Missed it by *that much*.

@ $12 an hour X 2 roommates:
Combined monthly gross income $4,000 X .33 = $1,320
Survival achieved.
I was making $12 at my retail job, but don't have an employed roommate, nor does it seem like a very practical option since I have a teenage daughter. And there is virtually no public transportation here, so you need a car and have to buy gas/insurance/tags.

I sincerely wish that our Congress would just pass a straight $12 an hour minimum wage and peg it to inflation; preferably housing inflation and not food which is what most federal benefits are tied to.
