The Tesla Bot is intended to automate repetitive tasks, creating a future in which physical work will be a choice, not a requirement. It will eventually have labor force and job implications, Musk acknowledged, saying that universal basic income, or UBI, will eventually be a necessity. And, he said, it will be able to accomplish extremely complex and challenging tasks — for a robot — such as obeying an order to pick up a bolt and attach it to a machine with a wrench.

Most machines in warehouses are immobile and still require a persons physical ability to handle.

We already have things which can perform repetitive labour tasks much more affordablly than skilled tradesmen - they're called Mexicans - but for some reason we still have a need for skilled tradesmen.

I doubt this very much. Boston dynamics are very open about robot tech and where it's at. Tesla cant even release an electric convertible on time letalone an advanced robot.

I've just started Carpentry apprenticeship on a large commercial site. It's in it's first stages and there's a lot of manual labor, form work and all kinds of chit. A lot of steel work and all.
Let me tell you something, there is no way robots will be able to replace tradesman in the next 50 years, at least not the likes of carpenters, plumbers, electricians. Building is complex, it takes a lot of time, quick thinking tradesman and it's not easy to get in and out around the site. A lot of chit needs to be precise, it's not something a robot could do, not in the near future at least.

Yeah, it depends on what tradie work your doing in the end. Some work requires brains like you said, but i know (at least here in UK) a lot of low class people work in warehouses and such where it is basically a repetitive work every day with 0 brain involvement.I guess it is the lowest class that is going to get fukked first when robots come into daily life.

Sounds like a gimmick, like a significant amount of musks other companies tbh (besides the rockets of course). We are far away from robots replacing humans in settings outside of manufacturing, where they are already widely used.

automation vs autonomous androids who pick up dog chit, mow the lawn, do laundry and dishes, and cook you dinner so you don't have to do any of that for yourself

musk will sell millions if he can make them do all that, and still keep the price tag under 10k per unit

Half those things we can do for virtually no effort already lol (and for much cheaper). Ever heard of a dishwasher? Microwave? And if your so lazy you wont pick your dogs ****s up you probably shouldnt own a dog.

I just dont see it as a realistic technological advance to happen for a long long time.

saving time and energy though - valuable commodities if you just want a 24/7 servant to do all of it with the command menu of an app on your smartphone who doesn't complain or need to be paid

still have to wash the dishes and load/unload the dishwasher. it's not a seamless process going from dirty dishes to dishwasher to shelf

if you cook all your meals in a microwave no wonder you think most people wouldn't splurge on an expensive personal chef

chit shoveling is one of the least appealing aspects of owning a dog, and most people wouldn't bother doing it if it wasn't necessary

musk already has the infrastructure in place with his AI used in autopilot. robotics isn't nearly as complicated as people think, and the main difficulty will be programming an android to simulate the attention to detail during these tasks like a regular human would, but adapting learning CPUs are a thing, so it shouldn't be that difficult with current tech

They might be able to do simple chit like working in a warehouse, but there's no way they can do complex building and problem solving like tradies do. At least not anytime soon

Pretty much this. There's also a lot of really tight areas that tradesmen need to work in. Robots are bulky and aren't going to fit under some sink without destroying it. Most tradesmen jobs require more then just turning some bolt. I could see these making car factories a little more efficient but hardly a threat to tradesmen.

50 years is a lot of time. Think about now versus 1971. Nobody owning a personal computing device to insanely powerful computers in everybody's pocket that connect to anyone from anywhere while having access to basically all information ever.

These things will be hard to automate for sure, but tech probably has a lot of unfathomable improvement in the tank.
