Engaged/Married miscers, need engagement ring insurance advice (srs)

Please respect the srs tag and don't come in here spewing your bull chit views about how marriage is dumb, women are sloots or anything else. I truly do not give a phuck

Got my girl an engagement ring and now looking into insurance for that overpriced marketing scam. What in particular should I look for or look out for? Any specific insurance providers that are better than others? Obviously my main concerns are it being lost/stolen or diamond falling off.

skip the retailer, go straight to dealers.

the fancy retail store and staff and furniture, you're paying for all that.

reputable dealers will hook you up.

Already got the ring. Got it on jamesallen.com. Much nicer ring than I found at local retailers, with a warranty, GIA report and all that chit.

I just added a personal articles policy through my auto provider. State Farm. It was simple and cheap.

We have a little over $30k in jewelry insured on that policy and I think its $150 a year

You're supposed to add it to your homeowner's policy.

Fuark that's nothing to cover $30k worth of belongings

Heard that those bishes will not cover it if it's lost. Only give you 30-50% of the value

Jeweler’s mutual is the best company for insuring jewelry. Most people just add it to your home owners.

It’s not that they only pay your “30-40%” of what it’s worth, it’s that they agree to “replacement value”. The insurance company will agree to replace the the ring with one of similar characteristics, or pay you out what they believe they would have to pay to get it done.

It's normally added to your home owners or rental policy. Most client's insure their jewelry based on the appraisal, which the insurance agent/and or company will keep on file.

lmao. You bought an engagement ring expensive enough to justify insurance? I'm a twice married guy myself who is quite happy with my current wife so I didn't come in to **** all over marriage or women or whatever. Honestly there's not much point to life if you're not sharing it with a partner in my opinion (and I'm not one of those lame no hobby 'happy wife happy life' guys either), but there is a documented direct relationship between higher engagement ring costs and likelihood of divorce.

My advice? Buy something cheaper and after a few years upgrade it if she wants, at least then you know what you're getting into. If her ring fits right it won't get lost and if you don't have a $9,000 diamond in it who cares if it falls off and you have to shell out a bit of cash (and you jeweler should warranty it for a while anyway).

I never knew such an insurance existed until this very moment. Can't say I'm surprised, though. There's insurance for everything now.

Good luck, OP. I learned something new today.

If you need insurance you spent too much OP,

My wife and I live a very outdoors life. We don't wear jewelry, our wedding bands are the rubber ones unless its a nice occasion when we put on the real ones.

My gf was cool with literally getting a ring from Walmart for $15 but we've been together for 11 years and I thought that she deserved more (even though I think diamonds are a complete scam). I got her a $8k ring so it's not going to break the bank by any means

For 8k just make sure it fits and get it refit if she gets smaller. If she's cool with a $15 dollar walmart ring then I'd buy that should she lose this one. Seems dumb to me to pay insurance for something unless that thing is something you need, like a home, health care or lawsuit protection(car insurance). You don't need a ring.

Not engaged atm, but my gf has agreed that if/when it happens she would be fine with a fake ring. Marriage is about the commitment to love and build as one, not materialistic overpriced diamonds or an expensive wedding. Dropping thousands of dollars on some ring is not my definition of a wise financial decision, nor would it do anything to ensure a successful marriage. Maybe we’ll be rich one day and I can give her a better one, but honestly what is wrong with a high quality $200 cubic zirconia?

This might actually not be a bad idea

If you really feel the need to get it insured, then I'd suggest checking in with your renter/home owner's insurance company if you have one. A lot of those insurance companies will let you add insurance on things like wedding rings if you can provide them with receipts of the purchase, and they'll probably give you a better deal than any jewelery retailer/dealer.

To be honest, if you're that worried about it, then you probably spent too much on the ring, and might want to reconsider your financial priorities. It's kind of odd to let yourself get roped into paying a ton of money for something you yourself called a marketing scam. If it was your fiance/future wife who talked you into doing that, then you're probably in for a long road of financial issues for as long as you're with her. srs.
She's absolutely not a materialistic person and has stated on numerous occasions that she would be completely happy with a cheap ring because she cares about the meaning of it much more than the physical ring itself. After mulling it over for a long time, we've been together for 11 years so I've had more than enough time to think about this, I ultimately decided to get her something nicer than some cheapo ring. Like I said before, $8k is absolutely not going to have any effect on my financial situation and although I do not appreciate diamonds and rings, if she likes it then dafaq do I care. I have plenty of my own interests and hobbies that I blow money on unnecessarily. As for the insurance, I am still a very fiscally responsible person so being out a few thousand if she happens to misplace it or something happens seems a bit silly to me when I could've paid $100/year to have it insured and replaced

Absolutely nothing but I am currently in the position that thankfully the amount I spent on it will not have adverse effects on other aspects on my life so why wouldn't I buy her something 'nicer' now?

My wife ended up becoming allergic to the ring and she just wears $5 rubber wedding bands now, and only takes the ring out for special occasions. If you're wife isn't materialistic like you said, you can get her a cheap ass ring that no person would ever know is fake. Moissanite, white sapphire or cubic zirconia will be a fraction of the price and keep the old one for special occasions if you are worried about insurance (or just return it). One of these would cost the insurance on the 'real' one. The one I got came with a lifetime warranty (free repairs and free shines every 6 months), homeowners would probably cover it under personal property for no additional costs but something to discuss with your provider.

I generally look for blood diamonds which helps with the price.

I do not even have full coverage on my $20k car, why would I get that on a ring I am not responsible for? If something happens to it, it is on her. Wedding bands are less than a grand and those are enough if they cannot take care of the other. If she loses them both and claims she cannot use detergents on the diamonds, get her a wedding band without diamonds for even less.

Srs guy at work just bought a stone from HK for $7,999. Took it to get valued and got told worth about $30k in West.

Add it to home insurance, don't get standalone/specific cover. Can't tell you how many times i've seen women at front desk of gyms saying they lost their engagement ring crying lmao. I remember vividly a 30s woman saying "I've only had it 3 weeks and I didn't get insurance because I didn't believe I could do this!!! He is going to kill me!! Please tell me someone handed it in"

jfl at expecting a cleaner or other woman to hand it in as well lol.
The part about the diamond being from overseas is retarded.

There’s a network that almost every jeweler pays to be apart of where dealers list their inventory for wholesale globally. There are dealers that scour these lists hourly to see if they could make 1-5% on a stone by flipping it. There’s no way your friend got a $30k for 8k just because it was in HK. It’s just simply not possible

If you’re buying directly from the actual jeweler who will make the ring himself, the price from the diamond won’t vary by much.

If you’re buying from a retail jewelry store chain, you’re going to get take. For a ride.

People need to understand the difference between “cash value”, “replacement value” and “appraised value”

Cash value is what you could sell your item for on the open market for cash (ie lower than what it costs in a store, like every other you buy)

Replacement cost is what an insurance company will pay you out to replace your item with something with similar characteristics.

Appraised value is an assigned value of what an appraiser thinks the item should be worth in a retail setting and is often inflated.

Insurance companies do not go by appraised value for jewelry, they go by replacement value. They even have a network of jewelers that they used to handle replacements.

So if you have a diamond ring that has a replacement value of $10,000 and you insure in for $20,000, you are going to be paying a (higher) premium based on the $20,000 valuation, but it won’t do you any good when it comes time to make a claim. They will only pay you out what it costs to replace it. You’re paying a higher yearly premium for nothing.

It’s recommended that you insure it for slightly higher than what you paid, just to keep up with inflation, but don’t go overboard or you’re throwing money away o. Premiums.

Fuark brah, mirin the diamond knowledge. Thanks for the advice

It’s not that they only pay your “30-40%” of what it’s worth, it’s that they agree to “replacement value”. The insurance company will agree to replace the the ring with one of similar characteristics, or pay you out what they believe they would have to pay to get it done.
agree with jewelers mutual. they will replace the ring. almost got to the point they were going to replace wife's rings and then we found them at the last second. they were good to work with and didn't try to fight us.

Had about $30k on the policy for $250/year.
