Looking to get away from the rentcel life and into chadhomeownership. I have curse that is a great job exactly in the field I want except its in the middle of NJ, homeownership would include 10k+/year in taxes if I stayed here in NJ so instead I am eyeing up just over the Delaware River in PA. My work is allowing me to do 3 days in office and 2 days from home so I am thinking about allowing a longer commute. I also can work whatever hours I want so I plan on leaving early from the house and the office to minimize traffic. For a while I was commuting for 50ish minutes a day each way to a jobsite, I was able to fill the time with audiobooks/music/ect. but I knew an end was in sight once that job was over.


Im thinking that the commute will be a sacrifice I need to make if I want to keep the job/career and have a nice house. A house that is 500k 14k/year in taxes in NJ is more like 350k 4k taxes once I get to the 1hr mark on my commute. Plus I wont live in NJ!


So for those who drive 45m to 1h15m+ to/from work (especially for a long time), how bad is it really? If it is bad, how much would it aleve the situation if you only had to do it 3/5 days a week? Or will I end up roping myself after a few years?

You’re already on it with the audiobooks as podcasts changed my commute forever lol. Kick on a podcast and then the trip goes by fast af.
Also helps to be driving something you enjoy too, and it’s 100% worth it imo.

How long have you been at it? I got a bunch of podcasts that I like too so the more the merrier. A nicer car will come after the house, dont want any new debt to show before then.

Commute is ~30 min each way, so not really close to what OP is discussing, but I’ve been doing it for like 14 years now. Audiobooks, podcasts, music are obviously clutch. Also, having time to sort of wake up on the way and also sort of decompress on the way home is nice. Def don’t mind commuting. Only thing is it makes me want to drive an econobox so as to keep from putting 20k miles a year on a nice vehicle, so there’s that.

My nicer car was actually an 04 GTO so not much debt but I hear you lol.
I used to be but on JRE but I’d just recently found a solid podcast following The Shield called the Shattered Shield. Definitely worth listening for any Shield fan.

And not having a commute is all well and good but sometimes a commute is the only option.

if you can't pay 14k in taxes on a 500k house YOU deserve to BE a RENTcel SCUM ded fooking SRS. 40 to 50 minutes one way IN absolute WORST rush hour traffic is my maximum I like to be around 30-40 minutes on a BAD day and maybe 20-30 on a good day 10-15 minutes would be nice but after sitting in a few lights and going to the businesses district it's not possible for me

No commute crew but if it puts you in a better financial position and you won't be neglecting a family then it's a no brainer.

Only issues I have with long commuters is when they have a family at home they never see.

always live near the office. life is too short for a long commute.

If I had to do it 5 days a week I wouldnt be inclined to make the move, the only reason why its being considered is that I would only need to do 3 days a week. This move would free up my ability to buy a house in a non-**** area.

Used to commute 1.5 hours each way, did that for 4 years, now commute 40mins each way, and miss the drive tbh. It was my unwind after the day, time alone to myself time (which you never get as a married guy with a kid).
Used to sometimes have to drive 3+ Hours each way to a job site when I was working in the oil industry

I never realized how much fatigue and life was being sucked out of me because of commuting until covid happened. Never going back to a 30+ one way commute. I coped thinking it was a good time to listen to music or podcasts, but those can't compensate for the added stress, fatigue, and time sink. Maybe if you have a nice and leisurely country road drive to work it would be ok, but it's almost never the case.

just remember 50 minutes becomes two hours with a little rain or a minor accident with all the low iq rubberneckers

used to drive 90 mins each way. i think i will quit if im required to go back to the office. it really does suck the life out of you

Ex-Sydneycell here - so long commutes are a way of life for a lot of people.

Last job I commuted an hour and 40 minutes each way. It saps you real quick when you're doing it 5 days a week in peak hour.

However there's light at the end of the tunnel:

- definitely switch your hours around so you're getting into work early in the morning before peak hour, and leaving in the afternoon before peak hour. Essentially empty trains in the morning + guaranteeing you're already on your way home in the afternoon before all the delays start happening are god sends.

- is very noticeable when you only have to do it half the week and not every single day. It is much more bearable knowing you've only got to do it for 2 or 3 days a week and get to go to your own home at the end of those days.

In saying that though - I now drive and am in my office in 25 minutes - and I feel a new lease on life honestly.

I will give you the same advice I give clients.

A longer commute is always worth it if it’s manageable. Cities are getting worst by the year and recovery does not seem to be in sight for awhile. A 30-60 minute longer commute could save you many headaches dealing with people in the city. Wear and tear on a car, gas, and expenses that come with commuting are far worth it for a nicer property with some land.

It does depend upon the commute too. If you’re commuting through a major beltway don’t do it. A lot of the property over here, depending upon where you live, 2/3rd of your drive will be through nice areas with decent people on the road.

If you think living 10% of your life as braindead is acceptable, have at it.

Also used to commute 30ish mins that was all highway and would turn into an hour plus with an accident at least once a week
My drive now is more country roads, so much more enjoyable

I've been doing a 40 minute/35 mile one way commute for the past five years. Absolutely hate it. It ends up being more like an hour + in the winter and you have to make sure you give yourself extra time so you're not late. Not to mention the wear and tear on the car.

A three day week would be more palatable...
