Is mental illness increasing?

I have always been of the opinion that mental illness (autism, down syndrome, add, adhd) are only 'more common' now because they are recognized when they were not in the past.

However, I am seeing a lot of people having kids with mental issues with otherwise healthy parents, with no known family history of mental illnesses (that I know of).

Down syndrome might be due to people having children at later ages thus increasing the incidence. But what about autism? And before you ask, no, these are not the children of cousin marriages lol. Oddly enough the cousin marriage kids are healthy and very smart.

Chemicals in the water, plastics, and air? Hormones and antibiotics in the meat? Fertilizers and bug poisons on the crops? Decreasing testosterone in men and rise and infertility. Crazy times we live in.

I truly think it’s earths ways of equilibrium.

All these random illnesses happen as a way of natural population control.

Imagine if every human born was completely healthy, no gays existed, and everyone could reproduce and live into their 90’s.

I think it's the same it's just more exposed since everyone has a virtual voice. When you hear stories from most older folks there's always crazy people in them on top of all the abusive homes and ptsd after WWI & WWII.

Autism is strongly genetically linked. Most people who have discovered/invented anything of note in the past were autistic people born into wealthy families who could cater to their learning style and the rest vanished into obscurity as "that weirdo with strange hobbies".

I agree - there is more diagnoses of mental illness because of 2 things: greater accesses to health care and less demonization of mental illness. I don't think there is a higher chance of mental illness as much as just more awareness of it.
