Handymen charge a nominal - lets say replace a old valve on a copper pipe for $60 or so in a allright neighborhood.

Call the same handyman to a better neighborhood where the houses are double the price of the first one and they wanna charge $300 for a valve?

Had a fuking leak in the ground and called a handyman - not a Plummer mind you, a handyman. Have used him before and was reasonable.

Fuker quoted $500 when he came to see it. Then said He’ll call after talking to his coworker. Texts back saying he can do it for $600.

As soon as I read the text, I went to the garage, picked up the shovel and started digging. Found the leak within 15 minutes or so. Maybe 30 minutes. It was a busted PVC valve.

Have never messed with PVC repairs so went to Youtube and then to Home Depot, brought the parts home. Next day took about 3 or so hours and $40 in parts including a $13 tool to cut PVC and $14 stainless steel hand shovel to dig under the pipe. This included cleanup and covering everything I dug up, washing the areas I messed up and tools and fixing another slow leak I had been procrastinating on.

I had offered him $400 to do the repair as I didn’t wanna mess with it - I knew even that was an overkill but I didn’t wanna deal with it.

He missed out on a payday…
