Why does time go by so differently as you get older?
When I was a kid, 6 hours at school felt like a looooong time.
I remember the 6 weeks holidays when you used to go back it was like you had been away for years. We used to go back to school in September, and the 4 months between then and Christmas feels about the same as 2 years does now.
I know that it's proportional to the amount of time you have been alive, but I'm also convinced some time dilation status effect gets applies once you are 18.

It supposedly has to do with your referrence point in terms of how long you have lived so far, and your perception of shorter periods of time, say this past summer vs the accumulated time you've been alive.
Can confirm, I'm 46 and the years are now flying by.

It's never about your age, it always happens when you are trying really hard to make things right in your life.
Usually, that's when time flies so fast.
however, also it's true...

One can imagine a brain develops when it gets older and experiences time differently. Attention spans, learning, experiencing all changes.

IMO technology changes your life a lot.
A lot of people come home and instantly watch TV, browse their phones, play video games, and surf Youtube for hours on end. I've been guilty of this, especially over the last two years and I realized it's making time go by "faster." Even music during a workout makes time go faster. Whatever technology that you use in order to get through things, just cut it down. Even chitting on the toilet with your phone, or listening to a podcast on the morning commute. All the distraction definitely speeds up time. I'm not saying never do these things, but IMO the key to a "long" day is avoiding these activities which put your brain on autopilot. Escapist chit.
Example: Lately i've been watching a lot of streaming on Twitch. I'll come home and instantly tune out for an hour watching dudes play video games. It's not healthy but it definitely helps me destress or whatever. It will kill 2 hours and feel like 15 minutes. Those two hours of the day compound over a year. if 2 hours/16 hours of sentience that's like 1/8th of my life being shortened. Kinda stupid, but just food for thought.

Because as you age, you've experienced more time, so time becomes shorter. When you're 10 years old, a year is 10% of your life. When you're 50, it's only 2%.

I read that life is less memorable as you get older because you fall into routines. When youโre younger you constantly have big moments and that makes time feel differently, but as an adult itโs usually the same old stuff and very rarely do you experience something new.

When you're a kid/younger person, you are constantly experiencing and learning about things that are either new, or are relatively new to you. By the time you're 30+, you've already seen and done so much chit so many times, that many memories don't seem to register as much or seem as significant. Chances are, you're not going to be looking back at a significant number of specific times you spent at some office job or tradie job site that make you stop and think about it all that much.

Because you're doing the same thing over and over again. Working 5 days a week takes a huge chunk out of your time. Do something different and time will appear slower

Iโve read in many places time feels like itโs passing by slower when youโre making new memories and learning new things.
Am experiencing faster time myself but itโs not too terrible. Was passing faster a few years ago when I was stuck in a rather repetitive grind at work.

You have less new and memorable experiences as you get older.
You don't remember every drive to work, taking the same route everyday, where nothing interesting happens. Doing the same chit at work, having the same conversations with coworkers about post malones. So life just flies by because you don't remember living it. The less memories you have, the shorter your life is really.

A young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.
The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."
The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

The older you get the faster it flies by. Also having kids makes it seem to go even faster. For those with babies and little kids, enjoy and cherish these years because you're going to blink and they'll be all grown up.
