Its amazing what lack of (good) leadership can do to an organization
Its amazing to see how some inept leadership can sink a company and its moral. This is a R&D tech "startup" and we have around 70 employees total. Ill try to do a TLDR of the situation I am in/observing. :
Pre Covid:Great motivation, clear goals, deadlines and appreciation from the top down on all the work we do. Felt like upper management +c-suite was pushing both company and employees goals. Most people enjoyed the work they did and the company they worked for. CEO would always make it a point to discuss what the goal for our investors/company is and how our work impacted it. Over the last 8 years we won multiple best place to work awards and the retention rate reflected it.
During Covid:Just as covid hit, we finished a round of fundraising for our next phase of business development, one of the stipulations was a change over in management to reflect better to those who have more skin in the game at this point. Basically any position above VP has been fired and they have been replacing those rolls. It took them 12 months to fill the essential roles, in the mean time everyone sat around rotting and collecting a paycheck. I was lucky to be working on a customers project that kept me busy through all of covid but I was the exception not the rule.
"Post Covid"At this point there has been no effort into brining the workforce back, we probably have ~50 percent of our workforce abusing the covid policies and doing next to no work from home. The rest are back in the office working as if covid never happened, including myself. Goals/Leadership are non existent, no one knows what they should be doing and its just a huge game of looking busy at this point. This has been going on for 8 months or so, and now they are letting people know that raises will probably not happen this year. At this point its been proven that half of our workforce isnt needed and that they are leaching off those who work. They wont do anything about people sitting at home collecting paychecks and everyone who is back at the office is rightfully pissed off.
We have had non stop resignations over the last few weeks of mission critical people, these are principal scientists who created the very science that we are using. Now management is just saying "No replacement will be hired, we will shift all their work around to other people so the momentum can keep going". Little do they know is that the majority of the people who are left that returned to the office are looking for other work at this point. Management is running around in circles wondering why moral is crap and resignations are occurring left and right. This doesnt even cover the covid hysterics that were implemented but that can be its own thread. I work in a department that is sheltered from most of the drama but at this point I am also looking for my out too. It sucks because this job was amazing 2 short years ago and now its absolute hell if you are someone who wants to work with a purpose.
The real TLDR is that the fish rots from the head down. /end diary

Yep -it's a bitch when that happens. I have seen it time and time again and guess what? The board of directors/ c-suite who made the decision to change things up so dramatically will take no responsibility and will instead sit there thinking "man, I can't believe what COVID did to this company. Lazy employees ruined our company." Meanwhile, the investment funds will lose more and more of their valuation and take a hit on the books as well. By the time the people at the top leave, the company will be a bare shell of it's former self. Soon the people at the top will move to another organization and fuk it up too. Ridiculous

Texas Longhorns football team comes to mind. Our issue is our boosters... but leadership has never shut them the fuk up, they're too rich.
Consistently top 5 best recruits, consistently terrible. USC, Georgia (not this year), Hurricanes, several of them I guess.
A few places I've worked too before management.

update: got word that a big layoff is happening, I am making it through but that the company is going to be 1/3 the size it is now. Good news is that my budget frees up and I get a nice retention bonus+raise in the process. The bad, is that I am seeing many people I worked with over the years get **** canned, I know its just business but I am losing some of my favorite coworkers in the process. Hasn't happened yet but it will after thanksgiving.
