I actually experienced sciatica the last few weeks...
And holy phuk it wasn't fun. I need my body for my job so even the simplest of things was a bit... challenging.
I do a back / core day almost every week, I warm up extensively for squats, have good ankle mobility.
It's pretty much subsided now and I was able to squat without any discomfort but man, wouldn't wish anyone to go through that.
Basically what happened;
1. Did a bunch of lower back stuff one week, then 3 days later, box squat, hip thrust, pin squat.
2. Was on my feet for 10 hours in new shoes.
3. Hamstrings felt somewhat tight few days later
4. Go in to squat, warm up, I squat ass to grass with 245 and feel a HUGE pinch in a nerve and sucked
5. Backed off, took a week off, did a ton of stretches, foam rolling.
6. Couldn't raise my leg sitting on my bed without some discomfort (never terrible pain)
7. Gradually getting better

That **** will make you cry, which it did for me.
What part of the glute area was it for you? Around the piriformis/glute medius area? That area always acts up in my right side every time.

used to get pretty bad sciatica pain but it was more from a bad bed + sitting on my wallet + poor glute activation. When it was flared up, sleeping with a small pillow between my legs relieved it enough to get a decent night of sleep. Only went away when I really worked on glute activation after letting it heal for a while (6 weeks for me), havent had issues in a few years now.
