Sports scholarships are stupid AF.

Sports scholarships are stupid. I say this as a wrestler who had scholarship for 2 years at a d3 school.

If youre a D1 football/basketball player on scholarship, you probably arent there for school and someone else is doing your work, or the professors are obligated to pass you.

If youre a d3-d4 athlete on scholarship, you probably arent generating the school much money, and wont be going on to do the sport besides maybe coach a highschool team.

I knew many friends during college who had serious potential academically, but fell short because of time spent playing/training for a sport for scholarship or working to pay for school.

I get if the school DOES want to have a successful team, they need to invest in their athletes, especially if they find a few gems.

Even in high school, sports are regarded so highly, but academics are seriously lacking. Fitness is important, most americans could lose a few pounds, but i would say intelligence/mentally, a lot of people are 'unfit' as well.

There are very few student athletes, most of those people are athlete "students". I see how and why schools have sports teams, especially if there is a history or legacy of a sport tied to a school, but in a way it seems odd. I think it should almost be some kind of separate entity, like how schools have a business school or medical school. Sports school.

The first three paragraphs are so flawed with misinformation and lies it’s obvious you don’t have a single clue wtf you’re talking about. Football paid for my bachelors, you sound like a never was that can’t accept the fact you weren’t good enough.

Full potato

It is all about money. A D1 scholarship costs the school $30k
A D1 athlete especially something like football probably make 5x-10x for the school
Out of everyone who plays college football like 2% make a D1 team. Not even counting those who actually play

It is much easier to be a good student vs a D1 athlete
Almost anyone can be a good student very few can be a top athlete so no point in having large amounts of academic scholarships

It's all luck. All genetics. LOL..the guys i knew who were on D1 scholarships were black dudes who were selling drugs on the side, partying all the time in their free time, ****ing bitches and came out super successful. A couple guys even got drafted to the NFL.

Yup learned that the hard way. Did wrestling for 4 years and got nothing out of it lmaooo. went to community college. to be perfectly fair, I was the first male to go to highschool and have never done a sport before that. looking back I regret I invested so much time into the sport because I really did not learn anything from it. I was the only Hispanic on the team so I was singled out a lot of the time :///// our senior team even got a honorable mention at state during my time there.

I think this country has its priorities backwards. The u.s knows that we will need a more educated population in the future, so why haven't we invested more time fixing k-12 education?

Honestly, I think we should cut sports out of highschool because like other posters have said, it has a low probability to success for a few students.

Stopped reading at “D3 wrestler”

But yes colleges should pay their athletes if they play at that “level” & schools should do same

Holocaust denial is illegal in over 18 countries. if an organized killing of jews happened so definitely, why would people need to serve prison sentences for questioning it?

It was a mistake for colleges to ever be involved with athletics. Sports and learning shouldn't have anything to do with each other. The way sports works in Europe is much better. Only intramural sports should be a part of college.

For athletes in sports that actually bring in significant revenue to the school, it makes sense.
