The most intense thing a modern man could do in America is be a homeless tweaker

Tougher than special forces
cops
firefighter
oil rig

or even prison


with all those you are guaranteed at least pay and or food (in prison) and some little bit of security that somebody might come save you

on the streets in a urban landscape surviving by your wits
is equivalent of a modern day pirate of western outlaw




Big Herc said on youtube prison show the people who end up being shot callers in the joint are people who weren't gang leaders in regular life but usually bums and addicts who get forced into cleaning up. Once clean with a little food in them, they become intimidating. They definitely are scared to fight or get cut even shot.
