lunch time struggles.
Hey how’s it goin everyone? My name is JJ!” Anyone have memories from school lunch time?”
It was embarrassing for me as a child having to eat lunch with my peers who are more western. I remember they would have all these nice lunches with lovely notes their parents wrote for them. However, my lunch was terrible. I had just arrived from Sri Lanka and my mom did not know how to prepare a proper western styled lunch. All the cool kids had fruit roll ups, DIY Lunch-ables, juice boxes, sandwich with nice meat and toppings…my lunch was cold Kraft dinner in a small zip lock baggie.
I remember the KD being so sticky that I could take the whole portion out in one lump. Hey, mom, like maybe add some butter to it so it’s not so sticky? And that was on a good day. Sometimes I don’t even eat lunch. I remember in elementary school all the kids had interesting food and all I had was a bag of Doritos and a sippy cup of flat Coke.
They say breakfast and lunch is important to help you learn before a class. I wish I had a proper breakfast like waffles or pancakes, toast or anything of that sort. It would literally be some rice and curry in an old Cheese Whiz jar. I knew this was an issue when I started going to the breakfast club in the mornings and they would serve us nice cereal, milk and oatmeal. I can tell you, I made a lot of friends there and the food was amazing. However, now that I’m a lot older, I can say I learned from my lesson of neglecting to eat in the morning or lunch. Food became important to function day to day and that impacts my mental health a lot more than you would think….can you tell??

It’s better than taking your lunch outside to eat and a bird craps on your sandwich, but your co-workers won’t loan you money because they think you’re trying to hustle them.
