Iowa flags lowered in honor of 66 year old teacher slain by two jogger students

A public prayer service will be held and state flags will be at half-staff Tuesday to honor an Iowa teacher who authorities say was killed by two students last week

Fairfield High School Spanish teacher was found Nov. 3 in Fairfield's Chautauqua Park.

Nohema Graber, 66, a Fairfield High School Spanish teacher, was last seen walking through the city's Chautauqua Park in Fairfield, detectives said last week. On Thursday, Fairfield High students Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale, both 16, were charged with first-degree murder and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder.

“My heart goes out to the family, friends, colleagues, and students that are dealing with this tragic murder of Nohema Graber,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said in statement ordering flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday. “Ms. Graber touched countless children’s lives through her work as an educator across our state by sharing her passion of foreign language.”

The public prayer service and vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfield's high school, according to Graber's obituary. The family will hold a private service later.

Hundreds of people remembered her Friday at a candlelight vigil.

"Nohema lived for her children, her family and her faith. Her next priorities were her job as a teacher and the students she taught, her parish and the Latin community in Fairfield," her obituary said. "She also enjoyed reading and was an avid walker at Chautauqua Park. Nohema was very disciplined at getting her walking in each day and just loved being outside enjoying nature."
