Does anyone think of what getting old will really be like?

My Opa is 94, and lived on his own in his own house up until last week. Three weeks ago one of the girls at the bank texted me and said Opa always comes in and asks the girls if they were single, and asks for their numbers...lmao.

Now in hospital he has gone downhill pretty fast. All confused, and combative and chit. Headed for long term care, but without his familiar house around him as a constant variable, his brain is not doing him any favors.



Anyone else think about how they will be/how it will feel when they get to that kind of stage? I mean, there is often some kind of slow cognitive decline, and it sure will suck.


Anyone do anything to keep their brains sharp/prepare for this?

I'm early to bed and early to rise. Also, play a few puzzle games every morning to keep my brain sharp.

Honestly though, I would much rather live a life like that with a rapid decline right before death than to live years having to rely on other people to fulfill my basic needs.

Just making it to 94 years old is exceptional, reaching that age and keeping your wits about you is next level. I think staying around younger people and keeping busy are important along with striving to continue learning. Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger are prime examples of this and pretty much what I'd aspire to be at that age.

We also have time and technological/medical advancement on our side, who knows what life will look like in 40-50 years

Oma died 3 years ago. Opa had lost his license, but needed to drive to see her at the hospital...

Crazy mfker studied and re learned to drive well and re took the driving test and passed, only so he could go see Oma.

Now he doesn't drive any more, but doesn't care.

came here, lived in a trailer in toronto
first job was digging rocks out of a field by hand
worked up to owning a big company doing water sewers and roads in toronto
bought the house of the old manager of CIL, partner company that tested the engines of the Avro Arrow. Tennis court, pond...four stories

1 grandma had the alzheimers, hopefully I don't, if I do I'll end myself before I'm too dumb to do it

A few years ago i would wear ear protection all the time practically 24/7

after a few months i started waking up in the middle of the night with what i cannonly described as severe depersonalisation i mean it only would last 10-15 mins but it was rope out of here bad

i immediately stopped with the hearing protection, the symptoms started to ease however it took a year or two to heal, hearing extraction fan noise would also set it off but only a couple days after like it was in a loop ?? idk

As you decrease in age could the vessels nerves etc in your head that contain consciousness collapse? causing a similar symptoms to the hearing protection issue i had?

Maybe consciousness electrons etc can convert/clone nearby atoms before they act unstable & disappear yet i was blocking/clouding them

Yeah, often enough. I like to think about what I imagine retirement to be and if I'm on the path to making that happen for me, as well as making sure I'm not overplanning and missing out on things now. The only thing that truly worries me is seeing my parent's friends cognitively decline and not knowing. That's nightmare fuel, so I just focus on what I can control and plan accordingly.

Yea my grandma is in her 80s and is staying with me and my parents for a bit.

Don't think it's that different. I mean you would have an older brain as well, all the neural chemicals would make you think and feel just like all the other old people.


I don't actually plan that far ahead, age: 50 is the farthest step that I could actually plan for.

For me it would be 70 max if i dont die before that of any accidents or murdered or something like. No point of living a life like a vegetable brah. Seen so many old folks in my family that lived respected lives brought to their knees with sickness where they cant eat, sleep or do things we take for granted.

He sounds like an amazing man. I'm sorry. It must be awful to see him declining like he is.

I think about this stuff often as I've always been extremely independent. It would kill me to be dependent on someone for all of my needs. Like it's one of the worst things I can think of happening to me. I hate thinking that my son will have to take care of me one day. I'd rather go while I have all my faculties.

My plan is to keep planning crazy adventures when I am older in the hopes that something kills me.

Hopefully it's a lengthy and expensive body recovery and the government pays it.
