Why is it so hard to find good employees?
Well my jr. paralegal quit today.
Said he rather work outside. He has been taking a lot of βsickβ days helping his parents with building their new house. Then said heβs just working too much and walked out around 2pm.
It seems since Covid itβs been ridiculously hard to find a good employee that wants to stay in the job.
He was a great employee, very smart.
He does find the job stressful, had a lot of anxiety but he had his own office, 1 1/2 lunch breaks, gets to walk the dogs serval times a day if he wanted tools and mental health days. I try to make it comfortable. As long as his work gets done, Iβm happy
I pay well, even gave him his Xmas bonus early because he over spent on his vacation cruise last month and was needing money for bills. I offer 300 dollars a month for health insurance and 23 dollars an hour.
Since Covid this is the third employee to quit the jr paralegal job. I hate training new people, idk what else to do.
Ideally, I would like someone who has experience over any type of degree. But most of all I would just like an employee that shows up consistently, works efficiently and sticks with the job.
What else can I offer to find a decent employee? Do people just not want to work?

Arenβt you in California? If so, $23/hr seems light to me, srs. I live in South Dakota and a paralegal here earns probably slightly more than that. Without knowing anything other than that, Iβd assume you need to be closer to $40/hr to keep someone.

Not all businesses are the same, the quality/size of the business attracts a similar level of talent I think. Motivation is the same.
I'm starting my own company soon, but the owner of my current company is very no bs, no extra perks or anything or coddling.
When it comes down to it, it's all about the bottom line. I understand that the purpose of a business is profit, and a worker is there to generate revenue.
The more I generate, the more I make, and the sooner I can start my own company. Make your employees aware of exactly how the financials work, and the exact numbers involved.
Then they will understand exactly what needs to be done, how the whole thing is a combined effort, what's at stake, and what rewards are in store.
Just my two cents.

I would not look at your employees as like spoiled kids that you must coddle and persuade with treats and perks.
Just treat them like mature adults, be direct and firm, otherwise they might take advantage of your kindness.
The most successful businessmen I've ever known were easy to get along with and brutally honest, the numbers they put on the board speak for themselves.
That's really what it comes down to IMO, numbers on the board. The cash money, everything else is secondary to the numbers. Also good for reducing costs.

People were making 25/hr @ the steel mill back when my parents were young, and the dollar was way stronger lol.
23/hr?
Wtf is that going to get you when the CPI is running over 6%?

Do you have a safe space room for him for when he gets stressed? Did you give him enough mental health days?

The incentives weren't enough, and there was a more valuable option the employee had available.
Economics is the study of choices, and people are choosing what you have just isn't good enough.
You have to up the incentive or keep dealing with the problem.

Any decent jobs require 1-2 years of experience even an entry level.
Thereβs no point jn staying with lower tier entry level when you can bounce on to the next one after getting some experience and increase your salary by 10k.+ if you are under the 100k brackets
Ex Iβm in lowest tier entry level it only getting paid 18 an hour, higher cht tier entry level starts at 25+ but want a year of experience, Iβve been at my current job 3 months and trying to bounce whenever I can.
These days if you want to make money you just have to keep jumping ship because Jobs have unrealistic job requirements
A conundrum jn the job market

Pay better. Simple.
Iβm a contractor, and I hope I can stay that way till retirement.
However, I did spend a lot of my life on a salary, and Iβd have taken any amount of chit for the right money.
Pay more money.
But as an employer you know that already, yet prefer to whinge about βcanβt get the staff blah blahβ and βmuh industry averageβ

Very few people wanting to work here vs before because until recently the government has effectively paid people to stay at home.
I've got a short list of candidates for a new role in my business; 6 people from within the industry who are all wanting to come into my business - but I've also had calls from people asking for jobs at random now with no experience whatsoever - I'm assuming they are no longer getting free money
TL;DR - headhunt someone if they are worth it. Might have to pay them a little more but you'll get someone who wants to work and knows the role

Either they only want to work part time
No experience with excel and word
Etc
I used to get tons of good resumes when I would list a job
If the person was really good, had the experience to jump into the job without months of training, and was committed to the job, Iβd gladly pay 35-40 an hour. I feel Iβve wasted so much money and time on training already

Sift through the applicants more thoroughly. Look for nerdy bookworms who are likely to be more loyal and have less social life. I know what you feel though, past couple of years have made it clear people have no issues leaving at any given time even if you do everything right. In fact, if you give more, they are more likely to take advantage of you.
