At least for retail or fast food and some other jobs.

When I was in college, I worked at a fast food place called Captain D's, and a few girls who worked there would always quit in early November to have the Holidays off, then stroll back in in February and get their jobs back. They were good, dependable employees is why they would get away with it, and crap jobs like that are hard to find decent employees.

When they left, the managers would always use shaming tactics and threats of never being able to find work in town ever again, but they were full of it, and those same managers were usually never around long, anyway.

I also worked at a Target for awhile and we had a few Mom's who would claim that the cost of daycare for their children was so much that they may as well be stay at home Mom's, and just happened to realize this near the Holidays, but then they would be back by March.

And that was in the 1990's.

I always worked on through since I was young and got a bunch of overtime since we were always short staffed, plus I was smitten with a lot of the chicks I worked with, or I may have bailed, too.

Black Friday and near Christmas was always so busy that I couldn't get around all the customers to do my job, so I would take a 20 min break every hour or so. Management was so busy they they never noticed.

I worked at a big, busy convenience store through college. Luckily the coworkers were mostly at the very least, understanding. We'd all take our turns on holidays, taking 4 hour shifts. Most of the time it worked out in doing dinner at home for each respective coworker. But we were almost always busy with travelers, it made me hate people and often sympathize with miserable retail workers around the holidays. I do my part now and just stay home.
