Strategy to get back into stocks…

Been sitting on cash since march 2020. Yep I sold it all back then and been waiting for the fukin correction that never arrived.

I wanna put it all back in and it’s not chump change either.

I’ve made the trades already that’ll execute Monday morning…25% VOO, 25% QQQ.

Some amazon, Tesla, ulta, Apple and 10% cash.

Should I let the trades happen, change my portfolio selection or keep sitting on cash? Hurt to realize everytime that I could’ve doubled my money if I had stayed in the market. Still made money on my cost basis but barely

but you aren't
and you can't
so quit frauding and put it in a generic fund like VTSAX

LOL, should have been buying all March/April/May last year. Markets have been booming since last spring honestly. Today was a very red day, but yea; trying to time the market never works out.

VOO, QQQ, you could have had quite the discount had you bought last year or shoot earlier this year. Derp derp.

Not a financial advisor not gonna give advice on picks or market direction.

But.

What if you only bought in with like 25% then waited a week then slowly buy in more or have the opportunity to average down if things drop more.

Slowly buy in and slowly sell out.

Averaging your buy in and sell out over time will almost always give you better results then hoping your spidey senses were anything more then delusion when it comes to what the markets going to do.

I've tried so many different things.... Here's what works best:

Buy something you are undoubtedly confident in, and it OBVIOUSLY will outperform the s&p for the next 5-10 years. Don't diversify into more than 10 companies. Actually 5 different tickers is enough.

Make sure the standing CEO/board members are original founders of the company because replacement leadership has no vision, and they typically avoid risk.

Buy larger cap companies.... $5b-$10b minimum.

If you have a founder-led company that has managed to amass a $10b market cap, it has already been vetted by a LOT of other people/banks, and generally people like what they're doing, or else it wouldn't have grown to this size.

Don't try to time 'dips', but rather add to your position at lower prices whenever you can.

Only sell something when any of the above^ points are no longer true, or it has become painfully obvious that the stock is overvalued, or the market space has evolved beyond the original strength of the company you initially invested in.

Let it ride. If the stock drops 68%, don't sell for that reason alone. "Never make an investment decision for a non-investment reason." Just because you personally are eating your balls on a position doesn't mean you are wrong; you just need to wait for everyone else to see what you already saw a long time ago.

Before you do anything you should figure out what your goals are. What's the purpose of your investment? Retirement?

Time in the market > timing the market

Wait did you sell during the dip? If so, gg.

Yes I sold during the dip to hedge against another move I had made. Now it’s time to put it back in the market

Purpose is to have some extra play money for retirement and maybe even some cash flow from dividends before retirement if needed

Here's a tip:

Buy low, sell high.

Invest in a company while nobody believes in it. This is the only true way to make money in the stock market. Had you invested in Abercrombie and Fitch when it went down 5 years ago, you'd be making bank today

My advice, don't buy stocks because most of it relies on you investing early and then on others coming in behind you. And most stocks don't even pay you a dividend. You are literally giving them free money.

Investing shouldn't be so much effort - put money in every month in something like the s&p and forget about it.

Trading on the other hand....

The last time I bought more S and P 500 the market had correct 5%. That did well for me. I bought at the low of that short correction.

Don't know of course how big this latest correction will be. It wouldn't surprise me if the correction was between 5 to 10% but that is guess on my oart of course.

I have some new money to invest so I'm keeping an eye on the market myself, looking for signs of a bottom. Will be interesting to see if Democrat states will eventually shut down and lock down once again. Lock downs don't appear to do much good, and instead cause a good amount of harm, but some politicians seem to want to continue the lock down policies.

Step 1 understand what a massive screw up you've done. Really, rub your own nose in it.

If you don't, and continue to follow the crowd, you deserve the poor results you will get over the long term.

LMAO good luck buying everything at or near all time highs. Since you sold TSLA has increased around 800%, Apple almost 200% etc. Most stocks are overvalued

It was a decision I made to hedge another move but yea it was a screwup regardless. I’m pretty upset with myself but no one know what the market would’ve done. I needed cash reserves so had to cash out to reduce risking loosing more value. I would do it again in the future if I needed to, but I’d only liquidate 50% unlike the 95% that I did. Lmao and sad at myself

Can you elaborate on the second sentence instead of making negative comments that give no info?

I’m thinking I’ll stop my trades I had made to execute Monday morning. I’ll put in 25% this week and 25% more every week there on.

Gonna setup monthly auto invest also starting December. 40% VOO and 40% QQQ. 20% left in cash to buy other things from time to time as appropriate.

Rivian, anyone?

Everytime I buy something it immediately goes down feels like lol anyone else?

In for the long haul, so I hope/think/know it’ll go up eventually

Haha yeah everytime it works out like this. I sold everything except my fracrionals in march 2020 like a dumass. Should’ve bought more but I had my reasons.

Now no one knows if this is gonna dip or not. Fuk it it’s only money. Can always make more. Right?

It may take 10yrs to happen after a crash but people who bough before the 2008 crash came out allright by the time 2015 hit (I think or a bit later). Lost only to inflation.

I'm hesitant continuing to dollar cost average in right now. I can't even imagine trying to invest a lump sum at this point in time.

I'd say average it in over 12 months

when everything falls apart is the best time to buy in, should have deployed in the plandemic dip and rode the gains off into the sunset. we should be due for another major crash pretty soon anyway, so you may just get another chance. this time remember to go in balls deep and don't pull out too soon

Been sitting on cash for 1.5yrs (details in the thread on why)

Looks scary but it looked scary 6 months ago also.

Everyone and everything says “time in market > trying to time the market”

I been trying to time the market for a long long time and I’m tired of waiting. I’m in about 50%. Gonna average out the rest over the next few weeks / months maybe a year. Dunno.

Don't feel bad OP. Even people like Warren Buffet have stated they don't see any good valuations in the market and that was almost a year ago.

Historically, a great indicator of when it is a good time to buy is when there is fear about the overall health of the market and right now there is lots of that.

Might make sense to DCA 25% of you cash into something like SP500 just to get more exposure. Then wait and consider adding another 10%. IMO it's probably not the worst thing in the world to save the remaining 15% of cash just to have cash on hand for any uncertainty.

It’s been said many many times bud. And I learnt it the hard way.

Don’t time the market. Average buy for an average joe with a full time job works the best.

I dumped everything at the bottom (was still ahead based on my cost). Should’ve just rode it out. Ain’t retiring anytime soon so it didn’t matter.

I panicked due to the pandemic and saw the empty roads and freeways. It was fuking spooky if you don’t remember. Felt like if I someone massless from a mile away I would get corona and instantaneously fall to the ground and die (like reports from Italy and Spain).

This is the reason I sold thinking worse has not arrived.

One other reason was I got into a contract a week before lockdowns and I had to go through with it. Needed emergency money incase chit hit the fan completely.

Buy and hold. ETFs/index funds all the way!! While holding a small percentage of IPOs and individual companies you personally like (I’ve always lost money doing this but I did it again haha)

Warren said having cash on hand is a bad thing. I’m gonna research if having cash in hand when market tanks (again, timing the market) is better than being in the market already invested when that 15% was available to begin with…if that makes any sense.

I think being invested probably is a better way to go but yeah I’ve always held onto about 20% cash and I’ve not done too well
