My Father Died Yesterday - Smoking Killed Him
My father died yesterday.
My Dad smoked for decades from the time he was 17 to in his 40s. When he got pneumonia he finally stopped. As he got older the COPD kicked in. COPD is a horrible disease and is related to emphysema. The meds slow it but its a death sentence. Over the last bunch of years I watched his breathing get worse and worse. Imagine suffocating in your own body because you cant get air even when you are on oxygen.
Last Monday he went into the hospital because he also developed congestive heart and cellulitis. He passed yesterday.
DONT SMOKE

Damn, sorry for your loss. But good message. I canโt imagine not ever being able to get a satisfying breath. Just thinking about it almost makes me freak out.

Terrible industry-smoking tends to kill people slowly over decades-while destroying their health in horrible ways.

Sorry for your loss bro. My friend's dad died from cancer at age 49. He was very fit and active. 3 months after his diagnosis, he passed. My friend has never been the same and cut himself off from all his friends. Stay positive in your dad's honor.

Thank you all.
The COPD appeared just as he retired. Initially it was not diagnosed but over 10 years I saw him waste away. He had stopped smoking probably 20 years early.
In the beginning it was pretty minor - just some inhalers, than later very light oxygen, than even more oxygen. It just continues to advance and you need more and more oxygen. Eventually no matter what you do, you cannot get enough air. Having seen it first hand, selling tobacco should be illegal.
The last week was the hardest week of my life. His suffering is over and he is with God and my mom.

sorry to hear that bud
My dad died last year from lung cancer due to smoking most of his life. He tried to quit a few times, but always went back to it (I think partly due to depression from losing my mom). By the time he found out, he already had stage 4. After seeing what chemo did to my mom for years before she finally passed away, he chose to not fight it anymore after finding out it had already spread to multiple areas. I'm just glad he's not suffering anymore as it was hard seeing him degrade over his last few months and be in constant pain.
I'm with you OP, DON'T SMOKE

Sorry to hear brah SRS. Last night my close friend told me his boss's mother died then literally 10 minutes later another close friend said he was at his niece's fuking funeral. Everyone dying out here. Doesn't effect me much since that's how life goes unfortunately but I try to be as supportive as possible to people I like. RIP

My dad started smoking when he was 20 but stopped when he was around 55 so a good 35 years. He wasn't a heavy smoker but obviously doing it for decades is bound to do some damage. He's 64 now and seems to be okay, no cancer or other diseases or anything. He quit by going onto vapes (before the whole thing where vapes are bad for you) but it helped him wean off entirely so there's that.

Condolences OP..
Thankfully there was a big push to stop smoking in the 90s and 2000s. My parents stopped around then. You dont see as many smokers in the US anymore - a great thing.

Sorry OP.
I'm the only one who likes to hit up a cigar every once in a while in my immediate family. I remember my perspective on it as a kid is that it's an old unfortunate dumb boomer activity, something perhaps the old timers didn't understand but it was a trendy fad at the time. Not to mention all the commercials I grew up with of people who had holes in their neck, lost their voices, etc.
Then in college I experimented with things I'd never done before, or thought to do (alcohol, tobacco, weed primarily). Tobacco became something I'd do in social gatherings with friends, very infrequently, like maybe a few times a month. After graduating, and after I got my own place, it became something I did twice a week or so. I never got addicted thankfully, as evidence from my last 6 weeks of no tobacco and lack of withdrawl or overall temptation. I just think about how congested, smelly, and apparently how obvious my smoking even very infrequently becomes to a dentist, and realize I'd rather go for weed or perhaps nothing at all lol.
Dumb random thought: I like to sometimes remind myself how Daniel Craig calls it a dumb habit he wish he didn't have, claiming to allegedly smoke ~60 cigarettes a day. Holy hell.
