7 Candidates For The Next Austin

I've watched a lot of stuff of this type the last year or so. His #2 pick was also a top choice in a different video about best places. The #1 pick has been on my radar for awhile, but I'm iffy on it partly due to the surrounding area.

7] San Antonio:

- added over 65K jobs since 2016
- population up 28K in 2020
- balanced economy
- several Fortune 500 companies
- may become a bedroom community for Austin workers that can't afford Austin housing

6] OKC:

- very affordable housing
- population up 11K in 2020
- lots of new small businesses/franchises
- young population [OU nearby]
- negative: reliant on the oil industry

5] Indianapolis:

- population increasing for 30 years running
- burgeoning tech hub with over 20 new startups over the last year
- low home prices [second only to OKC]

4] Savannah:

- art scene due to
- added 10K jobs in the last 5 years
- 29% of population are millenials
- affordable housing [less than half of Austin]

3] Columbus

- booming tech hub/lots of venture capital
- inward migration and good job growth
- younger city, especially for the midwest
- affordable housing

Hunstville:

- higher concentration of software developers than San Francisco
- Amazon Blue Origin, US Missile Defense Agency, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing
- high wages and good jobs [95% of the nation; higher than Austin]
- typical home price about $260K

Fayetteville:

- 13% job growth over 5 years
- youngest metro [median age 34]
- believes it is the next growth hub for the country
- Wal-mart pressures their vendors to open offices here
- home prices up 25% over the last year, but still half the price of Austin

Of those listed, Savannah would be my choice.

Super low unemployment (1.9%)
Low COL
Tons of low skill decent paying jobs
Tons of high skill jobs
Very low housing inventory

Thanks for the aware on Huntsville. May consider in a few years should Omaha not pan out.

Hopefully somewhere up north. The sunbelt is getting too big for its britches. I vote Columbus, but really my dream would be for New York to elect a solid conservative government and upstate boom once again (housing is cheap!)

Solid list. I considered Savannah GA at one point but decided to lease my first place is Houston. I'll probably stay here until I get priced out, which shouldn't happen if I stay on top of it.

I'd vote for Raleigh, NC. Has a ton of tech/biotech already, has the "outdoors" and relatively lower COL for the techcels, and has an incredible ecosystem of universities nearby to keep churning out new grads/ideas.

San Antonio does seem close to a sure thing. Savannah looks nice.

I was surprised about Huntsville. In the first vid I posted they emphasize a youthful demographic and high pay. In the one below he mentions it as a good choice for retirees. Huntsville is around the 3 minute mark.

Yes, the research triangle area looks very nice. But I believe that they already are known as a good place to move to and have higher home prices.

Columbus is really slept on, it's by far the nicest out of any of those cities. Tons of shopping, restaurants, and things to do, especially for a city its size.

All those places suck to live in though. At least Austin is warm and has the giant lake in town.

My top choice (but dont tell anyone): St Pete/Tampa, FL, still reasonable housing, tech scene, 0% income taxes, warm, and beaches.

You know my thoughts

NWA is the next Phoenix. Rapha North America and Canoo are both moving their HQ to Bentonville/Fayetteville, and the Cyclocross world championships are happening there, too. If they'll hurry up and legalize recreational you-know-what all of the Texpats in OKC will head East. Lots of money to be made in NWA, world-class museums, MTB capital of the world, family friendly, great schools...what's not to love?
