Why are we still lining up our cars to sit and idle while waiting to get food? We have the technology to stop doing this and it wouldn't even cost much money to do it.



How much air pollution and fuel waste would be eliminatedif we no longer had people running their engines for nothing?

How about the obesity epidemic?Would the closure of drive-thrus reduce fast food consumption, or at least improve the quality of what people purchase? If you have to walk up to a counter then other people witness what you buy. If you have to create your order on a cell phone then at least you shouldn't feel time pressured to hurry up and just pick something so as not to hold up the line.

What about loneliness and isolation?Yes, it would be a very tiny change, but I've actually been to that walk up counter. It is for an ice cream stand. In the summer when it is busy people tend to strike up chats with others who are waiting to order. Nothing amazing...have you ever tried X?, how about this weather?, oh, I really like X too.

It's a small thing compared to stuff like making everyone drive electric cars, but it wouldn't be expensive to do it.

Because people don't ride bikes on the road to get to their destinations. They use cars. Really low IQ take with that suggestion.

To reduce fast food consumption, there are many methods that can be employed over shutting down drive thrus. Examples include raising prices of fast food, lowering portion sizes (American portion sizes are twice the amount we have here), introducing healthier fast food options and cooking methods, or lowered price for the healthy meals and the list goes on.

When it comes to reducing pollution, I feel there's 1000 other things that can be done to reduce pollution in an impactful way before you get to "cars sitting idle at drive thrus". I really don't think drive thrus are adding a significant amount to our overall pollution lol.

I don't see how any of your major issues can be solved with removing drive thrus in particular when there's so many more effective things we can do to reduce said issues in a meaningful way.

If this is pitched to fastfood chains, telling them that it would "reduce consumption" of their product is going to be a hard no from them.

But I agree with all these points at their core. Idling in a long ass line is a no go.

That's partly why I enjoyed my time on the east coast so much. Not only were fast food places rare, but if you wanted a treat, you rode your bike or walked to the corner spot and sat outside to enjoy with your neighbors. Sitting in drive thru lanes feels sad now.

It is kinda funny when low IQ baboons will cut you in the double drive though line only for the staff to tell them to "pull up" because their order isn't ready yet.

Feels good driving past them with a mouthful of fries while they try their darndest to stare forward and pretend they don't actually feel like an idiot inside.

Even if people largely bought into the concept, I think winter/cold weather would make this too detrimental for businesses to be sustainable.

IDK. Strong competition from the recent thread title on nostril excavation discoveries.Bikes aren't required though. Just happened to be bikes in one picture I grabbed. The other picture is supposed to be for curbside pickup- order on phone, drive up, park, employee brings your food. You could also park your car and walk up to a counter.

It isn't the biggest factor in air pollution/waste. It would just be a very easy one to change. And I don't think people really enjoy sitting in drive-thru lines, we are just used to it.Maybe it would or maybe it wouldn't. Less total product doesn't have to mean lower profits either. Most of the time the healthier options also cost more than the trash options.Sounds nice. There was a lot of walking and bike riding where we lived when the weather wasn't awful. Planning/zoning is a big part of reducing needless driving IMO. Stuff like bringing back corner stores and cafes within neighborhoods instead of isolating all retail/restaurants to commercial areas.

I really don't like fast food much, but the last couple of years it has been the only option for going out at times, and was also limited to drive-thru only. My daughter really like McD's Double QPs. Just this past week I stopped to get one for her and it was a 20 minute wait to purchase a single burger.
