Daughter is 18 months old and seems quite smart.

Im getting sick of paying for diapers and don’t know which type of potty to get, either the one that goes on our toilet or the other stand alone kind.

Also, any tips for getting her trained? Assuming you just put them on it and give praise if they do their business?

For my kids I placed their little toilet in an easily accessible place and let them run around without a diaper. After pooping and peeing on the floor a few times they learned to do it in the toilet.

Interesting. I just had my daughter cruising around without a diaper and she peed on the floor lol. Don’t have said potty yet though.

So after they did it on the floor you just move them over to their little toilet ?

When they start going to hide in Closets or behind furniture to poop, they are becoming more self aware of that function. It's time to start thinking about it. Or if they ask to see the "shew wee" when changing diapers, they are becoming more aware. At least start the process. Remember it will take time

I heard 2-3 years old. I know plenty of parents who fight with their 3-4 year olds to use the potty.

The battle you are up against is they enjoy being babies and fear responsibility and learning to tie their shoes. You will have more luck if you assure them they can still be a baby if they use the potty.

Other methods that worked was bringing over other kids near their age and using peer pressure.

When I was that age, I was afraid of the big toilet. A very good seat fitter that hides the deep bowl below might help, but a small potty is less scary to them. You'd still have to clean it.

Lol at poop shame. Yeah I don’t think mine has any concept of that yet.

Get a small potty and start pooping in it yourself. She will see you and copy your behavior. It's a bit daunting at first, moaning one out in the kitchen - especially when you have company around - but try and stick with it.

Lol - but srs, you've got some good advice in this thread. Wait until they are ready, like Motiviert said. You can't force it on them when they're not at that stage yet.

They're all different and it takes time

Mine would hide behind the curtains lol. You would see little feet and hear all the grunting hahaha. Little chit! I actually had to bribe mine with cash! Every time she did business on the throne, id fork over coins. Usually a dollar a poop. pretty bad lol.

Girls will normally start potty training around the age of 2 (sometimes a bit younger/sometime a bit older,) and boys normally take a little longer. You need to schedule times to put them on the potty during the day, 25-30 min after a meal/drink, if you're going out make them try to potty before they leave, etc...

Get them into a routine and stick to it...they catch on when they're ready.

I made my kids a little potty chart and we put in on the fridge. Anytime they went on the potty they got choose a sticker to place on the chart.

My 4 year old is almost done potty training. And has very minimal #2 accidents. She had a late start due to Autism. Anyway, you can have a little potty to start thats easily acceptable. Personally I prefer to use the toilet with a seat topper or with a built in toddler seat like what I have now, link below. Easy to keep clean and nothing in the way. Just add a stool so they can get up on it. This way they get used to the toilet from the start. If your child is staying dry all night long and can hold it till they wake, then that’s a good sign to start. It takes longer to grasp going number 2. If they poop their pants. Show them the poo in the undies and that you’re dumping it in the toilet. Use training underwear! Pull-ups are glorified diapers. You can use a reward system. My oldest did it for quarters in her piggy bank. My youngest for a couple m&m’s. Maybe some small stickers or a gold star on a chart. Or tablet time.
Chart down when you’re currently changing wet and soiled diapers. This way you learn their potty habits and you can start timing when you sit them on the potty to go. Both my kids are visual learners. So they’d come in with me and watch me go and could see in the potty after. Talk to them about it. Get a book about it. And if your little one takes longer to potty train, that’s ok. Not like you meet many adults who still crap their pants. Lol they’ll get it when they get it. Good luck.

No idea. I do know that swatting a puppy with a rolled up newspaper works. Not to hurt but to make noise mostly.

I had them use the little potty for a bit then when they were able hoist themselves up on toilet I switched to the potty seat.


Little girls like panties. Srs buy some super cute panties with flowers or whatever and she’ll be less likely to pee in them. That worked for me as a kid and my daughter.Depends on the kid. My daughter was potty trained at 18 months but my son was over two.

Yeah my girls were trained young too. The panties are a good idea...they hate the feeling of having an accident in those.
