Where did metal like this go?

After thrash there was a dirth of amazing metal with killer vocals.

Singer for church and guitar player from savatsge both died in car wrecks

But the first church album and hall of the mountain king are up there on my list

Singer for Vicious Rumors also gone. :-( Mike Howe recently reunited with Metal Church but it ain't the same. Sounds off, not sure why other than maybe modern production.

IMO this era of metal is probably the pinnacle before it splintered into loud meaningless drek.

I miss the 80's and early 90's metal vocals. Anytime some miscer posts about some "awesome" new metal album, I listen too a few songs and the vocals sound like cookie monster on a meth binge. I hate the screamo ****. A few well placed screams, that's fine, but when that is literally all there is to the vocals, no thanks.

The first 3 bands you posted basically sound like early Power metal. That's still a genre that exists today with great singers, but more modernized.

There's tons of great metal. The issue is the metal "media" like Blabbermouth or Loudwire or whatever, seem to only choose one or two new bands every 10 years to cover. (See: Ghost, Baby Metal, Greta Van Fleet)
So instead of getting choices between bands, people get choices between loving or hating THE ONE NEW BAND currently on rotation, shoved down everyone's throats. That's why Ghost or GVF are so polarizing - the fact they have sole coverage, also makes them feel like industry plants, like your Billy Eilish or Nickelback type.

Yeah, I kinda consider this stuff separate from power metal which IMO diluted the "trad/heavy" aspect of metal with speed and "epic" styling. If I were to name a genre I'd call it "new wave of American power metal." Transition period that suffered too many deaths at once to keep up, plus the '80s stylistic elements that fell out of fashion. Lot of these bands faded off with experimental stuff that was too weird or just lost steam as well.
