I dont understand what was gained from this for russia.

- Ukraine still expressing interest in join NATO.
- NATO in no way backed down from their stance of ukraine, or other eastern euro states, joining
- NATO now strengthen presence in eastern eruope for future aggression
- sanctions might still be imposed


What the fuk was gained in any of this? Was it just to gauge western response?
