Is this the best and baddest modern close combat weapon?

Yes, yes it is.

Authentic antiques of this model go for hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

cant stab with a machete though, so in that sense something like a gladius would be better (slash & poke)

Modern soldiers aren't issued with short swords or spears, but they do use combat knives

Something with more reach would be more effective like a spear or a bayonet

It's not going to be used in the open, bayonets obviously have use and are used like spears, but combat knives are still used in very close quarters like inside buildings. Knife in the OP is a trench knife.

US soldier in Fallujah, combat knife in his left hand.

I prefer the Tactical shovel. It's practical and deadly in close combat.

Those finger grooves. Yes can act as brass knuckles but the real point is so it stays in your hand on the handle, you won't drop it very easily and really hard to get out of someone's hand. People often drop knives and sometimes your hand will slide down the handle and on the blade and that can suck.

Just need a piece of sheet metal cut out of an old oil drum. Sharpen the blade on a rock. Dude at my work is from Congo or one of those african countries told me this. It may not be the best, but it will get the job done.
