do you know your blood type?

This is one of those things where every time I'm reminded of it, I think damn I really do need to find out. I knew it at one point and forgot.

Doesn't your blood type tell you some important things about yourself?

Anachron is right. I ended up memorizing my type from carrying my blood bank card around in my wallet for decades.

On the back of the card, they listed the percentages of the general population that have each type. I am A+, which is (IIRC) about 30% of the population. The 2nd most common type.

AB- is the most rare, only 1 percent of the population. Not many blood bank donations of that type, but okay since there is such a low requirement for that type as well.



As a poster noted above, 0+ is the "universal donor". If you have that type, the blood bank will ring your phone quite often !

So AB+ is universal recipient? TIL today. I only knew that there was a universal donor blood type. I imagine the selfish in you would want much rather be AB+. Army should recruit these types too if you think about it.

One other interesting thing.

There is something called "Rh incompatibility" if mother and father are opposite types (one positive and one negative).

When having their first baby, the mother will need a series of two Rh immune-globulin shots during her first pregnancy to prevent "hemolytic or Rh disease" of the newborn when having their next baby.

Or something like that ! MISC moms can correct me if any of this is sketchy.

This was my father's blood type. The blood bank used to call constantly asking him to donate back in the day.
