Depends how bad it gets, precious metals might help you maintain wealth once society starts piecing back together but in an apocalypse scenario gold/silver are worthless.

Sorry but you've been watching too many movies. Gold & Silver have been true wealth for thousands of years, the history books show this. If you have the wealth, you can pay for security/armies, food, shelter, etc.

We live in a society were we are dependent on a grocery store to have food. If that stops people will go insane due to hunger. The fall of civilization will be a lottery ticket of survival in the city there's really no sure way to survive in it no matter how many guns or gold you have. Best way will be to live out in a mountain away from people as much as possible. Even then people will still try to ransack you while you sleep.

They were stacking gold because the had this long term plan to invade Ukrainian, they knew their currency and economy would go to **** so they needed something (gold) to instead secure against their loans etc not because they think it will become the new currency.

Gold in this day and age is valuable because of its application in technology/electronics. In centuries gone it was valuable because it was rare and pretty.

Like everyone else says, if the world goes to **** it will be a long time before we covet gold again
