Does anyone drive a luxury car and put regular 87 gas in ?

I’ve always put premium in but my mechanic buddy is saying it’s all a scam.

I’ve heard that the engine can knock / mileage issues if you use regular, but never heard of this happening to anyone.

What say you? Not worth the risk ?

My Jeep is a 2.0 turbo and it runs like crap if I put 87 in it. Power lags etc.

My mechanic was surprised I put it in but for a few extra bucks a week it’s worth it to me.
The misc is full of a bunch of simp ****ots

there is no need for higher octane. None of us are betting any large on a .001 of a second. The cars can handle it.

if you car knocks, you might need to, but that isn’t happening in 99.9% of cases.


These cars will run on vegetable oil for an amount of time lol. 87 octane is fine.

I drive a newer Volvo. The dealership told me to put in regular fuel, not to bother with premium. I've done that for 2 years and haven't had issues.

depends on the manufacturer tbh. was it built to run on premium or just recommend ? my ford truck recommends 89 but I use 87.

My MB w210 says premium only but thats because the engine was designed for max mpg efficiency and not using premium might give you spark knock/ fuel pump issues. The Manufacturers owners manual even says that.

We don't have 87 in Aus? Our lowest is E10 which is 90% Unleaded 91 and 10% Ethanol-based fuel.

this is the only correct answer

although you can tune vehicle to use other octanes if you want

if you just use higher octane because youthinkits better you are wasting your money srs, your vehicle has to be tuned for the octane you use

Normally aspirated doesn't really matter. Forced induction? I'd rather not take any chances of pre detonation since the engine already is under more stress.

+1 on what the manufacturer designed the vehicle to run on. They have no financial interest in helping the petroleum companies trick you into paying more for fuel.

Higher compression engines need higher octane. Luxury has nothing to do with it.

Just go with whatever the manual says generally but if you have a decently powered turbo engine you aren't doing yourself or your engine any favors putting in regular.

Gf has an audi with a turbo and it only sees premium.

Octane rating is a measure of how much pressure and heat can be applied to the fuel before it pre-ignites. That is it.

For high compression or forced induction applications, you MAY need higher octane to avoid knocking. Modern cars will pull timing to avoid damage, but your mileage and power will suffer.

Every car has the rating you should use in the manual. If you put high octane in a car that doesn't need it, you will lose efficiency. It is harder to combust.

The naming of regular, plus and premium needs to change. They just do different things.

my understanding is it depends on your fuel injectors. Alot of luxury performance cars have smaller finer fuel injectors, in these car you should use premium as they are susceptable to buildup and corrosion and can become clogged. Other cars with standard fuel injectors like the big american V8s it doesn't make any bit of difference

your mechanic is a retard to make a blanket statement like that. it depends on the ECU programming of the car. yes they will all TRY to protect the engine. but some are more lenient than others. Some manufacturer say you can use 87 OR higher for more power, some say only ect.

Think about it though the manufacturer isnt the one selling you the gas, they dont profit off you paying more for gas, they dont have much incentive to lie.

Also if the ECU adjusts timing because of knocking that means after its already detected some knocking happening.

I have a custom flash so i have to run 91 or 93

20 years ago maybe but manufacturers are forced to use more and more technology to meet the gov mandates on fuel economy, so turbos are very common, and tolerances are tighter.
