Any Misc Med School Brahs Or Doctors Here?

So I just watched this documentary Dr. Death.
If you aren’t familiar, he was a neurosurgeon that basically maimed or killed everyone he did surgery on.

The thing I don’t understand or the documentary doesn’t really explain is:

How in the actual fk do you go to med school, have two phd’s, etc, and not be able to do even the most basic surgeries he was absolutely fking up?

Is this actually pretty common? If so, that’s scary as fk.

He was either EXTREMELY incompetent and lacked insight into that

or

A psychopath and trying to hurt/kill patients but hide it (albeit poorly) by intentionally causing "complications"

to successfully complete the training and educational requirements a neurosurgeon needs i cant see being anything other than deliberate negligence

Yeah I feel like he was doing it purposely too, but they never really say that.

to answer your question
it is because he was in a MD/PhD program (university of Tennessee I think)
most of the time is in the lab doing research (i.e. trying to train him to become a physician scientist in the lab rather than a badass neurosurgeon)
rather than operating
when they went back looked, he graduated with a shockingly low number of surgeries

MD/PHD program does the phd schooling and md schooling seperately. IE you do two years preclinical for the MD and then 4 years lab for the phd then do two years on rotations with preceptor/wards. after completing this he would then have to apply and match into a neurosurgery residency where he'd be a resident under an attending for 7 years. not familiar with his case specifically but no way in hell should he get out of residency without an absurd amount of neurosurgeries being completed under supervision. then hed have to be hired as an attending but would require credentialing detailing how many surgeries hes been on.

Did he slip through the cracks here or something? not sure how hed get away with it but maybe id have to watch

and to my knowledge he was being intentionally neglectful creating complications on purpose
