- there is no way to know if it would have worked out long term [maybe she wasn't as great as you remember, or maybe you would get tired of her, or she would get bored of you, or one of you might have changed]

- since you have experienced a real connection before you know that it exists; double-edged, but there is hope that you could find love with someone else as you are capable of the feeling

Maybe I'm just a girl, or a romantic.

I don't think that you stop loving the version of a person that you loved in the past. How you feel about them in the present may be complicated- could range from fondness, to bitterness [best avoided], to indifference.

Still you have your memories of when you were together and it was good. And we tend to forget the mundane wearing down of a relationship over time while the early honeymoon phase sticks.

I've been grieving my ex who passed. It is a strange thing and surely not as intense as if we had still been a couple. There is a lot of shared history there, or there was. Now I'm the only one left to remember what was. It's true even for a lot of family memories with our daughter because she was too young to recall much.
