Welp - Messed My Back Up Bad

Ever feel like life is just one big joke? I was literally in the below thread less than a week ago giving advice to a fellow Misc'er about dealing with disc herniation.
https://forum.obnoxiousbrutes.com/showt...1220553&page=1

As irony would have it, just a couple days later I tweaked my back getting my new home office set up and am in excruciating pain.
I had a L4/L5 herniation over 10 years ago that absolutely ruined me for 6 months. Even had to drop out of school for a quarter because I couldn't get to and sit in class. I eventually rehabbed it back to 95%+ normal after months of work. I've had a few flare ups since that have lasted a couple days but nothing too bad.... Until now.

I was hoping this would be an annoyance but woke up the next morning and legit couldn't get out of bed. Whole back was seized up. I'm on day 3 and can finally move around enough to get around the house, do light stretching, etc... But sitting is killer, which sucks since I work from home at a computer and just started a new job.
Definitely some nerve agitation since I am getting that lightning shooting feeling throughout my lower back and hips and sciatica down one leg (same leg as before).

Been icing and stretching multiple times a day and taking Ibuprofen and Alieve. Really hoping for a quick recovery since I just started a new job and will need to travel soon for it... the thought of traveling right now seems impossible with my pain and limited mobility.

Going to get back to my old routine and hope for the best. I'm older and quite a bit heavier now than the last time I injured the disc so I'm pretty worried.

I suffered from a herniated disc for decades....I had a disc laminectomy about seven years ago. Best thing I've ever done and wish I hadnt of waited. I wasted years of my life suffering...

You will spend your life modifying everything you do to protect your back...and in the end you will STILL end up having surgery. Just go do it now. None of the half measures work, trust me as I tried them all.

You will be back on your feet two or three days after surgery and back to a fully revitalized person that literally never thinks about their back within a month or two.

What was your protocol for going from not being able to get out of bed to where you are now?

Will check out links.

Already have it from when I messed up my back like 12 years ago the first time.

Also started doing some of the stretches and exercises. I'm on day 3 presently so the pain in still too acute for a lot of the movements. Hoping it subsides quickly, at least to the point where I can do the necessary core work and more advanced exercises.

At this point I'm just doing basic stretches and some standard McGill exercises like cat-camel, psoas stretch, and hip airplanes in conjunction with cobras/press ups.

I could barely get out of bed this morning due to everything being stiff and seized, but after walking around a little, using the bathroom, and a hot shower I loosened up a bit.

Good luck on your recovery. I'm trying to avoid the surgery as I know several it either hasn't worked for or only helped somewhat (to be fair, there are a few it helped fix completely).

Brutal. My dad has had this a couple decades. I'm afraid that it's in my future :-/

You'd think medical technology would have progressed more than it has for something that debilitates so many people.

If I don't see significant improvements doing the rehab route within a few more weeks I may consider the surgery very seriously.

I've known too many people that the surgery did not fix it for them.... but there are also others that got complete or almost full relief. When I was in my early 20's and this happened I pushed hard to fix it without surgery. But now I am in my mid 30's and not as healthy and don't have the time to devote 3 hours a day to rehab like I did before.

I mean - 12 years ago I was debilitated by this. Literally changed my life and impacted every facet of it.

Early on after I felt ok I was doing pretty great. I was in that stage where I was feeling almost 100% but knew what not to do as it might cause pain. No squats or deads, but was benching 4 plates, running a couple miles 2x a week, and living my life pretty normally.

Then work picked up in my late 20's and I found myself at a desk for 10+ hours a day and skipping the gym. I tried to get in 3x a week for the next few years and although I had a few flair ups from things like trying Yoga or bending the wrong way quickly, I was largely ok.... flare ups lasted a day or two.

But then Covid came. I worked from home. I sat in an office chair 14+ hours a day and a lot of that is my fault. I could have got out more, and I did try.... but a 10 min walk wasn't going offset the half a day sitting a computer and the 50 lbs I had put on.

So here I am. I'm not blaming anyone but myself. I let this happen and lost sight of what I said I never would after my first disc injury.

I won't mince words. I deserve this. I got fat, lazy, stuck to a computer, and I lost sight of movement and purpose for movement.

That being said, I need this sh!t to end. My new job requires travel and I am high up in the company and there's a lot attached to that.
I've been around the block and I can deal with a flare up that tightens the back and makes you walk like an old man for a few days. This is nerve pain, legit debilitating pain that makes you question life and whether you should call an ambulance or just give up.

There's 99 year old people doing deadlifts
There's 12 year olds with "slipped discs"
Why can they lift and not be in pain
Read key points / read the book

For the 1% of issues where you're genuinely convinced it's physical, massage or chiropractor it out. The other book gives you the entire manual A to Z of myofascial pain and all that.

I do not agree with it anymore EXCEPT it does relax and release the stress much much much MUCH faster.

In order for both books to coexist in the same world you have to understand my mentality; that chronic pains origin is mental (therefore surgery, and pain pills are evil and bad), but massages and chiropractic are for really stubborn stress and the engagement of another person into your body's stubborn regions are enough for the mental stress to subside. Plus it feels good.

But you can waste thousands and thousands on
1 surgery
2 pain pills
3 bodywork
4 chiropractic

And get literally nowhere except broke

Always try Sarno's book and meditation FIRST
Try deep tissue massages and chiropractic as secondary feelgood
NEVER DONT TRY TO ENGAGE SARNO'S BOOK 100%

Also if you're doing something retarded like abusing alcohol or you have really toxic people in your life or you're constantly broke it's gonna be damn hard to remove mental stress.

I just wrote a book for you. So buy both books and learn about mindful meditation too and prove me right that there's good people in the world willing to give

100 PERCENT EFFORT into what I suggest because every time I write this nobody tries it.

By the way let me show you a text message from my ONLY friend EVER to take my word for it who USED to NEVER lift EVER and had back and wrist SURGERY and WANTED TO ROPE a few months ago:

You can think he's frauding, or that I am, or that his case isn't like yours.

I'm really tired of posting this bc most people don't try and forget about me but it's cheaper by far, I'm selling nothing. And you have little to lose by trying

My protocol was to use headspace app for 6 weeks, reduce alcohol consumption, lift weights as if my pain wasn't real regardless of the fact that the pain was real, change jobs and dump 3 of my "friends", and tweak my diet. Always concentrate on form so you don't get Charlie horses. There's literally billions of people out there convinced that Charlie horses + mental stress is what causes chronic pain. No, mental stress causes tight, locked, muscles that are supposed to be rested and sending physical pain to tell you you have unresolved issues that are real life related and not exercise related.

Today I lift with no belt and focus 100% on form

Here is a picture of me from today, the past two days were both leg days, I'm super sore, today was chest day but not arm day, I did an hour of walk jog run, and tomorrow is another chest day

I'm not perfect but I do lift hard and I'm 100% legit
I'm also not a child I won't say how old but far from my 20s.
Damn, dude. I admire your passion.

I don't think I fully subscribe to what you're speaking on though. But that being said, I do think these types of injuries have a way of getting you in your own head and creating a self defeatist mentality. What you're explaining is overcoming that fear and doubt.

But with all due-respect you can't "will" your way through heavy lifting on a recently herniated disc that is creating nerve compression.

I love lifting... but bro - I am not looking to find ways to lift heavy.... I am just trying to find a way to be able to do my job and keep my income stream going. Today was the first day I could sit for more than 20min before losing my sh!t in excruciating pain.

I'm sorry you're tired of posting this, but I do appreciate you posting it. All of us bad-back-brahs need all the help we can get. When I first posted about my healing my herniated disc 12 years ago I literally had HUNDREDS of PM's. It's something that will impact a lot of us heavy lifting brahs.

I just bought the Audible for Sarno's back pain book and mind-body healing connection.

I also have an appointment with a local chiro/pt that supposedly specializes in this. Traction therapy did my wonders before, but unfortunately, all of the major players aren't near me anymore.

And for what it's worth, to address your accusations about me - I do drink too much. It takes away some of the pain... both physical and emotional. I am trying to fix that as I speak. Another thing you're right about is my mental stress. I have a fair amount of that. But all of that alleviated doesn't pull pressure off of a nerve. There's more to it than that brah.
And I am certainly not going broke. We used to joke about misc'ers being executives, but I am an executive and I am very financially healthy. I just don't want to keep dealing with this old ass injury haunting me like this to the pont of debilitation when I am starting a new job.

I’m tempted to just go strict calisthenics and cardio…… hate the injuries associated with lifting weights

Not trying to impress anyone at this stage… just trying to maintain and live healthy.

back pain is a bitch. Especially if it gets to some serious sciatica which I had. That is the worse pain ever. Like nearly 24 hours of crying pain.

One thing that tends to help when I get serious back pain is digging into the Psoas muscle, stretching hips a ton, doing lots of glute work hitting all areas.

And if it helps to, gut smash with a foam roller or better yet, a basketball. I read that it tends to relieve pressure on the back as the abdominals tend to be super tight which can contribute to back pain.

But I do remember your thread from years back as it came up when I was searching for remedies when I had that same issue.

I had some major back pain last year. Was doing heavy squats and everything was fine. Had some DOMS the next few days...3 days later I turned my body to get out of my wrangler and felt something kind of pop. By the time I was walking into the store I knew something was wrong. Next morning I could barely move. I had some strange combination of extending 1 leg allowed me to rotate off my hips and make it out of bed. It was hell. Took several weeks, but finally better.

Ibuprofen 800mg 4 times daily, ice in AM, warm shower after, tried diclofenac, icy hot...didnt do anything. Only thing that actually seemed to help was a ******** 5/325. I took one a day for about a week just to get me through.

I havent squatted in 10 months, but do heavy leg press, lunges, RDLs, etc. Considering starting to squat again, but am so nervous to end up in that pain again.

Good luck brah...thats tough. Especially when it involves the nerves.

During that time I did end up buying a standing desk from Vari. Absolutely love it. Definitely helps when I dont feel like sitting or back is acting up.

Highly recommend.
