I had to do "Flight Quarters" for a while when I was in the Navy, and I fukin hated that shyt.

Why was it a bad experience?I know a guy who became a PROFESSIONAL pilot at 48yo. Extremely rare and difficult... but possible.

But its never too late for a Private License for example.

Seriously speaking, I've been thinking about being a commercial pilot. Desk work is boring as ****.


From what I understand it's $100k for schooling and 1500 flight hours to be considered for main.

Also drvillian and planolifter and ironmanlet.

You have two ways:

-Integrated ATPL
-Modular ATPL

Integrated ATPL = From 0 to Commercial Pilot License (w/ some Ratings - Which are "certificates" that allow you to fly a determined group/family of aircraft or fly in some "conditions" ).

Modular ATPL = You do the same thing but in modules. Example: You get get your Private Pilot License (allows you to fly, but not professionally) and then, do your ATPL theory and ATPL flight training to get your CPL and Ratings. It is usually cheaper than the Integrated, but it takes a little bit longer... the advatage is, you can start flying as soon as you get your PPL (not professionally).


Before starting your training, you must get your Medical Certificate, which can be:
- Class 1 (Medical Certificate) - For CPL/ATPL (professional pilots); or
- Class 2 (Medical Certificate) - For PPL (non-professional pilots).

It tests your physical and mental health, decision making, etc...


After you get your Certificate you gotta find a school. For PPL some schools will allow you to get your training (if you pay) w/o any exam. So you pay... start your trainig and then you get tested (multiple exams) in the end. For CPL/ATPL, it depends on the school (see below):

-Some require you to have Math and Physic knowledge, but they don't test it. They just ask for a HS certificate (w/ Mathematics and Physics) and you are good to go. (You must pay... obviously);
-Some require you to pass an exam (Math and Physics). As long as you get approved, you are good to go;
-Some require your to compete w/ other candidates (just like Universities do).

In the vast majority of schools...it isnt hard to get it... it is hard to get out. Mine had a ~50% drop out rate, for example. Ive seen some big guys crying cuz they had no money left to keep their training or do the exams again. if you fail more than 4x one of the courses, you start your training from zero (so... you gotta pay another 100k).


After that you gotta get experience so, years later, you can join an airline.


Now... some airlines request a Bachelor Degree (any field)...so they won't hire pilots without it. I would recommend it...the thing is, it makes the process much more expensive. Just imagine you gotta pay 100k for the bachelor degree + 100-150k for the flight training + type ratings (for example, a 737 type rating gonna cost you around 30k - some companies pay for it, majority don't, so you gotta pay them before you start working for them).

Plus, you gotta deal with a lot of uncertainty and pressure. Lets say you pay for all your training, you work for a few years and then, when you finally got your job in an airline, you find out you have some medical condition. You can't renew your Medica Certificate and you lose your job, forever. The dream is over andnow you gotta get a job doing something you do not want, while you keep paying for your flight training (if you got a loan) knowing you will never be able to be a pilot and you could have spent the money in a better way.


Majority of us aren't doing it because it is "fun". In fact, it can be boring as fuk if you don't love it - just imagine being inside a cockpit for 12 hours... Most of us are doing it because thats who we are. Thats what we were born to do.
I remember I used to get emotional everytime I used to see a plane in videos, movies etc. for example. Even today, I can't see videos like this (below) without crying. So if you feel nothing watching these, than being a professional pilot is not for you.

*btw, I forgot. You can obviously get your license thought military training, but you gotta be young and it is hard to get in because the training is free (and because they wanna fly fighter jets...), so a lot of people try that path.A little bit more than 100k (especially in Europe... dunno about the US).

Some pilots make it to the airlines before the 1500 flight hours. Depends on the market.I'm waiting for them to come in, so I can update their information.

Had an engine fire once. Sounds a lot worse than it really was/felt in the moment.

Those are all fun stories but let me be a dbag real quick…. What I think one of the most relevant positive outcomes of flying was for me…


I learned a lot about myself man. You have to be able to get over yourself. I know pilots are cocky *******s, but I promise you, they understand very well they are human and very limited in ability. Learning to fly is an emotional roller coaster and in the beginning I would suggest the hardest lesson to learn is that you just inherently suck.

We are competent people. Pilots have to be. We are used to succeeding. No challenge has been difficult. We just do the tasks required to reach our goals and that is that. Then flight school…..

You can’t do anything right. At all. Ever. And you do not know a ****ing thing about anything.

You have to answer difficult questions about complex topics in front of the rest of your class starting at the very beginning and you can’t. It is extremely embarrassing but the truth is, no one else is judging you, they are simply grateful they didn’t get that question.

It is a huge punch in the dick man.

I am grateful I had it. Eye opening.
