90's kids pretty much the last generation of kids that grew up without the influence of social media

it was all about video games, saturday cartoons and playing tag with the homies outside

I think that the parents are the key factor here.

It does seem like there has been an ongoing effort to suck all the fun out of childhood. Pretty much no old school celebration of holidays in public schools because some group might be offended by it. Helicopter parents. Over scheduled kids.

Oh, and since 2020 I guess regular doom in the media. Highest doom since the Cold War nuclear annihilation + AIDs crisis in the 80's.

The old dream wasn't everyone's ideal and plenty of people never made it, but there was at least some sense of hopefulness about the future.
