Is circuit training actually kind of underrated by the lifting community?

I used to be all about single-lift sets orthodoxy, but honestly, I've been using some "circuits" recently that really deliver the pump. I put circuits in quotes because they aren't like CrossChit circuits or some ****gy time chit like that, they are basically multi-lift superset type exercises such as:

- 140kg deadlift x 5 then immediately 10 pull-ups then immediately wide-grip lat pulldown at some random weight for burnout.
- 80kg incline bench press x 5 then immediately 10kg pec flys x 20 then immediately 40kg neutral grip dumbbell bench burnout.
- 100kg squat x 5 then immediately 20kg dumbbell lunges x 20 then immediately hammie curl machine at some random weight for burnout.

These routines are really easy to put together for basically any "primary" lift, to train some of the accessory muscles. Am I LARPing that integrating a lot of these kinds of routines is likely to give me gains?

Goals are basically a combination of aesthetics and strength, so I'm not especially trying to add a huge amount of size, if someone is going to tell me this is an unideal way to acheive hypertrophy, with which I'm not nessesarily in disagreement.

Yeah I'm gonna try supersets like this next time after reading it on misc

Have always just done one set at a time with rests inbetween

The main benefit seems to be efficiency, same amount of work in less amount of time
Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

Bro the pumps are legit. Like, I've never had a lat pump before I started doing this kind of chit. I'm very confident that this is going to yield some gains if mixed in with classical progressive overload routines as well.

Clearly, you know your goal.

Before reading your post, from the title I thought "the circuit training" meant for general athletes or beginners. The kind that doesn't suit advanced lifters' needs because at some point your progress would stop from the lack of focused progressive overload. But yours is not that kind of circuit training.

So if it works for you then it works for you.

Speaking for myself, I've been exclusively using antagonistic supersets for the upper body and it works for me.

Thanks for sharing, good luck!

Can you give me an example of the kind of supersets you would do for research purposes. Any muscle/group, I just want a better idea of what you're talking about.

Yeah something about circuits feels very much like doing some meme workout, which is why I've always avoided them as a rule. Part of me is suspect that this kind of training will deliver a lot of burn, but not a lot of gains. I did back today doing a lot of these circuits and I just got back up to my baseline min deadlift weight which is 140kg (took three months off for injury).

I want to try to see if doing this kind of training will help me keep adding the weight on up to four plates or if, as Kaz seems to suggest, I'm going to see a stagnation in gains relative to what I would see doing strictly periodized progressive overload.

Mine is a simple one.

Bench Press and Weighted Chin-ups.

Details are all in my journal since 2007.

Over 35 Training Journal: Samurai, Without Ever Having Felt Sorry For Itself

I only do them and a few sets of low-intensity Squats and DL.

It’s a lot harder and cooler IMO

What is a more sigma workout?

Some lame bodybuilder sitting on a bench waiting to do his set every 2 mins or some sigma buzzing around the gym, doing multiple exercises one after another, rarely stopping for breaks and utilizing the entire gym with complete disregard for anyone around him and only focusing on his grind. You tell me Tom?

When I do circuit training I leave an item of mine on at least 7 different machines (ID, water bottle, headband, hat etc.) so no one takes the equipment.

I've heard good things about combing push/pull movements into supersets. Another miscer was posting about it stimulating crazy growth. FUARK. Need to try this now.
