I'm spending a week at my parents home and I decided to help my dad with the yard. The riding lawnmower was in the shop so I had to use the walking lawnmower on 1.5acre property, as i was trimming the yard I realized there is absolutely no benefit to having all that yard. Boomers eat that chit up and it has no value outside of the "perceived value" people thinks it has. Which is why if you lay down fake grass it lowers the value of the peoperty. Hell, even when i was living at home, my parents didn't let us play on the yard it's just a massive lawn that just wastes time to maintain and soaks up $200 of water/month just to keep it green because we're in a desert.

Don't get me wrong. I have NO problem with gardens because there's actual purpose to the labor. But a lawn does nothing.

I've already made up my mind that I'm only going to have decorative rocks and wood chips for my yard.

In Cuba people will cut with a machete which is wild, they will also use the grass to feed their horses

In any case, I remember reading that the trend was started at Versailles, the Paris suburb of French royal palaces

They had so much land that they could just trim grass, hedge designs, etc. and use it as decoration

It was kinda like a flex, like "I got so much land that it's just for looks" vanity lmao

Like many royal trends, it caught on with the people and became a standard part of our culture

If I had it my way, would just let the grass grow, it's what I did in Maryland when I lived alongside the creek and protected forest

I've actually seen this in the PNW and way out on the West Coast, a lot of people in the small towns just let it grow and even have goats

But here East of the Mississippi, I have rarely seen anyone let me do it, not even in the hood, my neighbors will always say something and I'll cut it just out of respect

Doesn't hurt that mowing the lawn is just a really satisfying experience, the smell is nice too, kidna reminds me of a fresh cut football field

Spending a lot to water a massive lawn in NM is dumb, sure. But if it were me I'd probably plant buffalo or another seed that doesn't require a lot of water.

I have an avg size lawn, so $15 in crabgrass preventer, $20 in fertlizer 2x, and occasional watering isn't a big deal at all to me for cost or time. Plus, cleaner paws for the pupper and they enjoy it more.

I've always enjoyed a nice lawn since the age I started mowing.If you don't get off on trimming the driveway and sidewalk in a perfectly straight line, then IDK what to tell you, but you're missing out.

Previous homeowner of my house was an avid gardener. I feel guilty sometimes because I'm not keeping up on it that well. I keep it trimmed and everyone sees my house and is like "wow that's nice" and honestly the only time I think about it is when I have to trim it. Grass pisses me off. Ivy is kind of taking over the yard and I'm just going to let it. Grass is mostly weeds anyways.

Agreed and I have a good sized front and back yard. My neighbor across the street spends over 10 hours every week on his yard. Probably 20 this time of year. Srsly. If I didn't already know he has no kids, the amount of time he spends in his yard would make it obvious.

I seeded my backyard with clover last year and it was awesome. Lush, doesn't grow as fast and only issue is bees love it. Also chokes out pretty much every weed.

I detested living where my neighbors were an arms length away in a cookie cutter house. I will take my 2 acres. I look at the maintenance as exercise and a chance to catch some sun.

I spent years as a landscape tradie. Full time when I was high school and helped my best friend out when he needed bodies up until last year.

I absolutely hate doing my own yardwork now, but I'm too stubborn to pay someone to do something I can do myself.

I agree with having mostly rocks trees/wooded type areas with natural vegetation for most of your parcel, but lmao at not having a big enough grassy area to throw a baseball or play some football.
