I live in the middle of the city and anytime I have to visit my gf's family in the burbs or do something in a neighboring city it seriously boggles the mind how people live out there

brb huge avenues 10 lanes wide and mom SUVs and pickup trucks driving like absolute maniacs to the next fking red light, repeat ad nauseum
brb chain restaurants, dave n busters for miles, shopping malls, strip malls, dicks sporting goods
brb every house looks the same and is a fking maze to get to
brb massive traffic to get into the city center. people srsly drive 1 hr each way to and from their suburb just to work - WTF
brb no real sense of community, tons of different high schools and chit. maybe some sense of community in the mcmansion neighborhood
brb no real diversity of people. every single family is just like yours and you'll have the same conversations for every grill or bbq for the rest of your sad life
brb they only real excitement for older men is bothering the good looking young girl staff at the 50th identical sports bar chain down the road

living in the city or small town/country is GOAT

brb in city have actual family owned shops, neat restaurants, cool bars, cool music venues
brb professional sports, events, massive concerts
brb cool parks and amenities like museums or historical sites
brb diverse people, more interesting people, more niche friend groups based around the hobbies you like
brb commute is shorter bc already live in the city
brb not sitting in traffic because all my favorite spots are in the neighborhood and walkable or a less than 10 minute uber or drive
brb near an international airport and flying somewhere is not a huge event but very convenient
brb thousands upon THOUSANDs of young HBBs moving to destination cities following college. Miami, LA, Austin, NYC, Chicago etc. If you are even halfway attractive you will never have a dating life anywhere close to this outside of a poppin city.
brb multiple dates a week with beautiful women who literally live within half a mile of you when you are single
brb not compromising on gf because you have a massive selection

Easily. So quiet I can hear a pin drop at night, can make a nice bonfire in my backyard and no one gives a chit. Restaurants so good 10 mins away that it'll never be worth it to have to drive into the city.

Saying one part of the city is better than the other is pretty laughable imo. They all suck. Pollution of light, sound, and air. Both have trash and homeless everywhere. Traffic etc. And small town life fukin sucks if you value any privacy or being gossiped about. The reason people like the burbs is because there's just less trash, less traffic, less pollution. And it's not that much better. It's life on easy mode, which we all know people love.

Just lol at living in any town.

Makes a lot more sense to live in your own space away from the city. The only reason to go is the occasional dinner/show/concert and get the the fuk out.

This. Most of America is the chithole sprawling suburbs OP describes. I currently live in an area like this. Moved here to get out of a fairy hood area (grew up and spent most of my life in the city). I absolutely hate it every time I step foot outside of my apartment. It’s miserable. It’s soulless.

A combination of urban and suburban work best. Small towns like what used to be considered old “streetcar suburbs” are ideal IMO because you do have that ease of access while simultaneously getting some land and low stress/low crime.

Unfortunately most areas like this are in the Northeast (i.e. very liberal). The Southern cities everyone is focking to are mostly comprised of the 8 lane highway, shopping center on every corner, cul de sac tract home suburbia. So fuking retarded that they built them like this. It doesn’t even make any sense. BRB I can’t cut through this side street to get to the next main road. I have to drive 2 miles north, take a u-turn, sit at the same red light for 3 light cycles because of traffic just to get back. On an typical inner city grid system it’s so easy to get around the traffic is nearly irrelevant.

American developers really undercount walkability and density. Honestly I’d love living in the downtown of a major city if not for crime. That’s literally the only reason I’d say small town squares are the GOAT living today. Been robbed at gunpoint, attacked by homeless people and gotten into too much chit to deal with that urban lifestyle anymore, but in a perfect world I take busy city over suburbia all day.

I loved city living growing up. Nothing better when every night is about getting yucky with the boys and finding wet holes. But as an old man I enjoy a quieter, less crowded, less trafficky type of life.

There are crappy suburbs and absolutely amazing suburbs. Some now are planned out like small cities so literally everything is within a short walk/drive from your house. Some even don't allow the same number of homes in X radius so everything doesn't look the same.


I'm sure living in a large city is amazing if you are wealthy. But for the 'average' guy? Are you going to be getting bottle service in a club every night? Are you going to be dining at high end restaurants every dinner? Going out to enjoy breakfast, brunch and/lunch from local spots/cafes?

From 18-26ish its probably the GOAT but once you start getting older its great to own a decent size house on a decent size piece of real estate with a more relaxed/laid back life-style. You can always commute to a city for a concert or sporting event or whatever.





Personally I'd take some land in the country or near a smaller city of 100-200K any day over a large city.

Sadly town squares are harder to find because it involves some history like you pointed out but it can’t be beat. Architecture with personality, amenities of both city and suburb.

IMO you need walkability and you need local culture. Cities have that but you get negatives with them. The suburban sprawl means every house is the same and if you want food it’s driving to a Panera lol


Instead walk down street to a mom and pop place and talk with locals.
