Whole foods closing englewood store 6 years after opening was celebrated in chicago '

https://www.google.com/amp/s/abc7chi...s-in/11804936/

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Whole Foods is closing its store in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood just six years after its opening was celebrated on W. 63rd Street.

Customers of the Whole Foods Market in Englewood said they were thrilled when the store opened in what was considered a "food desert" on Chicago's South Side.

First opened in 2016, the 63rd Street grocery store was opened in what was once a food desert, promising to bring healthier food choices to the area. At the time, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the city committed over $10 million in tax breaks to help make the store a reality. The store employed around 100 people.

Asiaha Butler, CEO of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood, said she worried the store would close. "We knew this wasn't a store that was supposed to gain a lot of profit," Butler said. "We are in a food apartheid here and this was a corporate responsibility decision that was done."

Residents said they were particularly angered by the news as it came two days after Whole Foods opened a huge new store downtown at Chicago and State.

whats kinda funny is that the article says another grocery chain should move in because the underlying business fundamentals are solid. If thats so they why did Amazon with the most money and ability to sustain losses leave it?

coincidence?

Wealthy Chicago homeowners hire armed off-duty cops to stamp out carjackings and robberies as out of control crime spikes by up to 86%

They complain that ghettos are "food deserts." I've been to this Whole Foods, it was constantly empty, you never had to wait in a line for anything, and they usually had maybe like 2 cashiers working.

There would be longer lines at a Walgreens.

They also opened up a Fresh Market, and guess what? It's also constantly empty.

I'm surprised it lasted 6 years, I doubt it was making a profit.

They're also closing the one at Lincoln Park as well.

Must be because of racism......

I'd be extremely suspicious, if anything.

Unless...unless...it was part of a much broader sophisticated operation...involving...involving...shapeshifters? ???

Maybe spies were asking "hey, why are white suburbans constantly travelling to a black area" and the spies started questioning whether shapeshifters were going to those neighborhoods and wreaking havoc and/or killing blacks.

Possibly playing into the Lex Luthor look lol

So the problem was that it was too expensive/unaffordable for the community? Or was the area beset by crime that scared away shoppers?

Probably both. It was also a pretty ****ty one, the produce section was small, wouldn't touch anything from the hot bar, the pizza would be sitting out for at least 2 hours.

Unlike Detroit, there's still some awesome areas of Chicago. At one time, not that long ago, you could go downtown during the weekend at night.

Yup. I never go to Chicago anymore though. Have no reason to.

Sad part is those crime statistics don't account for the outsourcing of crime from chicago. Majority of our car jackings at gun point, home invasions, or gun point robberies now are coming from Chicago thugs coming out to wealthier areas.

Thanks Chicago. Nothing better than high taxes, political corruption, high crime, and zero progress.

What about that new bridge connecting Windsor, Ont and Detroit, Mi - what's it called, the Ambassador Bridge or something?

EDIT: Sh*t, my mistake. The Ambassador Bridge isn't the new one; the new one is called the "Gordie Howe International Bridge". My mistake, totally forgot.

This is just another example of wealthy out of touch people having no idea what impoverished neighborhoods need.

Why wouldn’t you open a normal grocery store? Are poor people really gunna buy wild caught salmon and dragonfruit?

If it’s a “food desert” all they need is an affordable grocery store. What a potato idea like complaining about lack of transportation options and opening a helipad.

I would wager that's only the case because its not being reported accurately.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they're skewing the data for crimes in Chicago to make it seem safer then it really is, but that's just my two-cents.

That is a problem caused by high crime levels, food deserts. It isn't just a problem seen in Chicago. Other Democrat run cities who defund the police and have woke DAs that do not prosecute property crime are also known for having food deserts.

"Walter Williams: Low-income neighborhoods face hidden crime costs"

https://tylerpaper.com/opinion/colum...731-11ea-8b9e-
2b1c98df63f3.html

excerpt:

....Crime imposes a hefty tax on people who can least afford it. They are the law-abiding residents of black neighborhoods. Residents must bear the time cost and other costs of having to shop outside of their neighborhoods. Supermarkets that are abundant in low-crime neighborhoods are absent or scarce in high-crime, low-income neighborhoods.

Because of the paucity of supermarkets and other big-box stores in these neighborhoods, some “experts” and academicians have labeled them as “food deserts.” That’s the ridiculous suggestion that white supermarket merchants and big-box store owners don’t like green dollars coming out of black hands.

The true villains of the piece are the criminals who make some businesses unprofitable. By the way, these are equal opportunity criminals. They will victimize a black-owned business just as they would victimize a white-owned business. The high crime rates in many black neighborhoods have the effect of outlawing economic growth and opportunities.....

Oh yea Chicago is well known in US history as being probably the most corrupt city ever.

And I doubt crime statistics are accurate anymore. I have friends that are cpd and detectives and tons of cops left for suburban areas. My buddies wife wants to move states to get him out of the force because of how dangerous it is getting.

As I said in my comment above too, the crime is being outsourced from Chicago, so it isn't recognized as "chicago crime" but the local suburbs crime.

Gang members literally drive out here and car jack dodge chargers in broad daylight in drive throughs or roll up to peoples garages with guns and steal cars. Like actual nice neighborhoods 45 min away from the city. I was house and dog sitting for a family friend last year and down the street at 6am they car jacked a cadillac from someones garage.

The worst part is these guys all get thrown right back out on the street. 4 years ago they a major crime spree of gangs stealing cars from dealerships in the suburbs and joy riding them and abandoning them on fire or wrecked, and these guys had rap sheets of 80+ crimes. They keep them for a night and then throw them back out.

I've got quite a few guys on the inside of places that blow my mind sometimes with this stuff.

I’m not sure what you mean. The tax break was the incentive to open the store there. Operating a failing grocery store for 6 years likely cost them at least that much.

It was an out of touch move to make voters think wow they’re doing great things for the community.

While that is completely true, Chicago is a special type of corruption. It also brought the city $13.5 million in federal tax credit for this $10 million dollar "tax cut."
