Is moving in with the family an actually valid idea? I'm 26.

I make like $120k after factoring in bonuses and overtime, before taxes. My rent is $1450 but it's going to be $1700. Add in the bills and chit and it's probably like $2100/mo. Nerdwallet tells me I can technically afford up to $3k/mo rent given my area and income.

Family offered to let me live with them for pretty much free. Although I have lots of furniture and chit, might have to actually throw some way, or otherwise put into a storage facility.

I'm 26, nearly 27. Got a 6 months emergency fund but not much else currently, aside from a paid off car and a nice Roth 401k for my age. Debt free.

The thought of saving back an additional $2k/mo sounds so appealing srs. I'd probably be able to save back, in total, like $4k-5k/mo, getting a down payment on a good house within 2 years. I'd be 28 or 29 by then. How dumb am I for even considering this? Thoughts?

I'd say move back if it means a nice house in 2 years. If you can saving nearly $100k by then, that's great imo. A big enough down payment will mean a mortgage that's lower than rent.

Absolutely. I would move back in and save $100k/year for as long as I needed to in order to buy the house I want cash.

It sounds more plausible to me if my drunk uncle didn't occupy the guest room srs. He failed at life, divorce, lost everything, hasn't had a job in years. I'd have to share the office room with my dad who works remote. If there was an extra bedroom I'd be onboard srs. Was a neat thought to fantasize about. Thanks misc.

Its hard to say without knowing anything about your family, culture, your personality/life-style, etc. Also the size of the house is a big deal too.



If your out chasing women/dating/clubbing/hooking up it makes more sense to have your own place. If you're an introvert that chills in his bedroom all the time living at home and stacking money/investing makes more sense.

You will have such a high disposible income that you will most likely wont budget as carefully.

This is hard to break if you decide to live on your own again.

My advise is don't do it; tempting as it sounds.

I moved out at 22, well really you could say 20 because i was renting with a relative for 2 years.

Be prepared to start slowly hating your family if you go through with this. Sounds wonderful because of the money you'd save but in reality, seems like way too many issues will arise

This. I stayed with my pops for a few months before I switched jobs as I didnโ€™t know where Iโ€™d be based and didnโ€™t want to sign a year lease. Saved 3k/month on rent, but at what cost? Went into the city and stayed with friends most weekends but it wasnโ€™t ideal. Was a good time, but glad to be back with my own apt
