Awkward social situations

Have you ever had a time when you've said a long, slightly emotional goodbye to someone and watched them leave thinking you wouldn't see them for years, then seen them like 10 minutes later and made eye contact, and just nodded awkwardly and carried on walking?

What other awkward social situations have you endured?

I think the worst are when you're around people who are talking chit about you, you suspect it, and they're doing their best to hide it. Happened recently to me with this gossipy group of chicks.

Of course none of them have the nerve to say something to my face, and when I confronted them they'd just deny deny deny as a group. Not really a situation I can laugh about in hindsight.

Not the first part lol, but sure the 2nd part I've had plenty of awkward social situations.

Some years ago I worked a temp job, and I was vibing with some girl. I asked her if she wanted to go out to a bar she said yes.

We didn't get wasted or anything just some beers. Afterwards, I walked her back to her apartment, and she said "Well that was fun." I said "Yeah for sure" I leaned in for a kiss, and she dodged it, and instead gave me a fist bump ded srs. I let out some random joker sounding laugh, and told her "No worries!" She looked at me like I was crazy.

in my experience the best way to handle awkward social situations is to acknowledge them out loud. Usually if you're feeling awkward, the other person is too. And if you acknowledge it, ironically, it will make you seem less awkward.

just say something like 'well thats awkward' or something, anything.

anything else will simply be ingenuine - which makes you look more awkward.

cliffs: being genuine is NEVER awkward, if in doubt, say what you feel in life. you'll make enemies and make friends, but people will respect it

Custom down here is, when you meet a friend in an informal setting you hug. Bros hand shake with one hand and hug with the other, and with girls you just straight hug, sometimes go for the kiss on the cheek. One of the bros gf would always hug and do the kiss cheek thing, which I never really bothered to do, but it can be seen as impolite not to reciprocate.. so next time, I'm ready. We meet, hug, and I go in for the kiss BUT she has picked up that I don't really do that, so she had let go and was pulling away and I ended up kissing her on the neck lolol, felt awkward man.

Awkward moments are a perfect time to make the other person laugh with some slick humor.

I have them all the time with other parents. I’m awful at small talk and can never think of anything to say.

This as well. There was a skit about this on the 'Armstrong and Miller show' but I can't find the clip.
