I suspect its mostly insecure auto enthusiasts, the same people who post on reddit "save le manuals!". This crowd of person always has something to complain about regarding modern cars: automatic transmissions and convertibles are obviously the two easiest picks. For whatever reason, mustang fans (usually teenagers) seem to be the worst examples of this crowd. Convertibles are heavier and don't handle as well as coupes, so I suspect people originally started hating on convertibles due to "OMG no handling and can't race on the track!", but even if convertibles handled the same as coupes, the argument would just shift towards something like "but the lines look different"
If I were buying a weekend car, I would rather have a convertible than a coupe. I have a pickup truck for when I want comfortable driving in a big enclosed vehicle. For a car that is purely for a fun, and you're not actually tracking it, a convertible seems more fun to cruise around in (open air, beautiful exhaust note, just a more fun and unique experience compared to my DD).
my ideal weekend car FWIW: C6 Z06. If I could have that 7.0L with a big ass cam and a convertible (or targa), that would be the most fun weekend car to me.

I think some purest sports car fans hate on convertibles because they have slightly inferior performance du to added weight and less cornering ability due to less body rigiity. Like that even matters or is the reason the person bought the car.

I used to be like this when i was young. Hating on dudes in verts. Part of it was in the 80s and 90s cars made such little horsepower that the stat line in the back of car and driver might be significantly slower if you looked up the vert. I get the argument that the "track" focused versions should always be hard tops, but to say a convertible wasn't an enthusiast choice was all wrong.
The enhancement of experience in a vert is amazing. Nothing like driving down a twisty mountain road with the top down, supercharged v8 screaming, rowing through the 6 speed gearbox, wind in your hair, all of your senses come alive.
One of my cars is an 03 Cobra Convertible. i could have had a coupe for the same price, but I wanted that feeling. The car isnt going to handle a track like a modern car anyway, its all about the raw connection to the driving experience.

I think the 4th generation Mustang body in general is poverty as phuck looking, don't care whether it's a convertable or not. Have never heard anyone say anything about "Mustang convertables" broadly though.

Speaking of insecurity, most people I see driving convertibles are old women and old balding men. I'm guessing you fall in either group since you feel the need and don't understand the premise.
